LIGHT BULB moment for my son!!! | ADHD Information
WOW! I am SO happy for you!!!!!Nice to hear good news!I am overjoyed reading your post! thank you for sharing
First
off - Holden has FINALLY started the AR reading program at school. He
came home SO excited the day that we got the letter and said "Mom, you
HAVE to sign this so I can start reading these books and get POINTS!"
... LOL! Well, the light bulb moment came last night when he was
reading a Pokemon book (a bit above his level but I figure, challenging
is not always bad) and he said "WHOA! I never knew this about this
pokemon .. that is SO cool. I have to tell Tristen this tomorrow!"
He realized that reading is SOOO much more than just looking at the
words. He said "WOW, I didn't realize how much you can LEARN by
reading!!!!" **BIG GRIN** you have NO idea how long I have waited for
him to say this! I KNEW he had it in him to read and ENJOY it, but he
just wasn't. Now that his attention issues are under control with meds
(Vyvanse, 30mg) he's doing WONDERFULLY with his school work and
homework and he's just processing so much more. We knew he was a smart
kid, but it was getting him to realize that learning is more than just
a job, it CAN be FUN too, WOOHOO!
Ashton is blossoming again, socially. They said the last few days at
school he's been WONDERFUL! Social, very happy, loving (turkey is
giving all my hugs away!) and has been working VERY hard at school.
YAY! Not sure if this is diet related or what. Ohh.... I forgot to
mention; we took him off his Adderall XR because it was MAKING HIM
SLEEPY! Literally, he'd fall asleep within 2hours of taking it during
the holiday break, so I told his teacher and so far, they haven't had
any complaints. YAY!! SO now he's only on 2 RXs.. Risperdal and
Clonidine (that's at bedtime). He's on a few supplements (and will
probably start more once we get the other test results back) but he's
doing SO well. Maybe the blossoming is a combo of the supplements, the
removal of a few allergenic foods (citrus and peanuts) and the fact
that the Adderall XR was making him sleepy and he's no longer on it.
He's SOO much more with it! He was dancing at a party we went to
this weekend. Just twirling in circles (and making everyone dizzy
watching him, LOL!) but he was having a blast and I didnt' care if it
wasn't "normal" dancing. It was a family thing so everyone understands.
Kim,
In my experience, just keep reading to him. It may take a while for it to click for him. Some kids don't really start to enjoy reading until 4th or 5th grade (my daughter) when their skills catch up with what they really want to read.
Just my $.02,
Wow - Congratulations!!!! Did I ever need to hear this. We keep battling with my 6.5 year old to read. He loves to be read to, but hates reading himself and really fights it. I am worried he won't pass 1st grade at this rate! I hope one of these days he too can realize how fun reading is. His older sister loves to read and just devours books. We currently have Kyle on adderall XR 10 mgs.... but I am not sure if it is working.
KimKim139833.7631828704Hey, my 9 yr old son is living in a parallel universe just outside Chicago. He is now doing AR books (and testing out pretty good) and has a good friend named Tristan. Thanks for sharing, we need to hear the good news.It is a wonderful moment when a child becomes excited about reading something! Congratulations!
You must be so thrilled that things are working for your son and he is blossoming in so many ways!
