starting meds?? | ADHD Information

I need to know what you guys think.  My son is 4 1/2 and was dx in october.  The neurophyc said that his case is mild.  He doesnt show the aggressive side of ADHD but he is very very inattentive and impulsive and cannot concentrate for long.  Sometimes while we are talking to him it's as if he's not even listening and responds with some off the wall sentance that he heard from a movie or tv show.

He needed a language eval from the school.  We couldn't even get that done.  WE tried 3 times and all 3 times he refused to cooperate.  Saying that he cant do it.  it's too hard.  Or that he doesn't like it.  He couldn't concentrate on a thing for 2 seconds!

My husband and I were very adament about starting him on medication so early.  WE both feel that he's pretty young and after reading so many posts on here about what you guys have gone through to find the right medication and dosage and the horrible stages in between just scares the poo out of me.  However my son is very smart, I dont feel he is reaching his potential because he cannot concentrate.   It's also hard to watch the rambling fits he goes on with words and sentances that dont make sense.  It's like a jumble of things that are going through his mind and he's trying to get it all out so fast but his mouth isn't working fast enough with his brain.  It's actually kind of weird.

What have you guys done?  Would you do it again and what kind of med and dose did you guys start off with??  fill me in on your story.

Compared to many we are still in the beginning stages really.  My DD is 5.5 and DX'd.  She has more the impulsivbeness and aggression and less inattentiveness.

We started at 18mg for nearly two weeks, no change at all. Increased to 27mg, still no change.  My DD did not swallow the pill either I had to put it at the back of her throat which was very hard for me to do.

Doc then RX'd Dexedrine.  5mg, 3x day.  First two weeks were great.  No tantrums, no fits, although she had the loss of app. and was a little mellow.  Both of those wore off and she eats well now.

She also was RX'd Respirdol by the doc.  It increases the app. and helps with sleep.  The Dex was keeping her awake until midnight.  It is also a mood stabilizer.  She takes that 2 hours before going to bed.

Still not sure the Dex is 'the one'  We are limited to what she can take b/c it has to be crushed.  I know it can take several pills at many doses.  Would I do it again?  I don't think I have a choice.  My daughter is getting sent to the office at school at least once a week, home life is crazy and she is losing what few friends she had.

We also do beh. modification, reward charts as well.  We are trying to get her in to a social skills teaching school here as well.
