dexedrine, can anyone tell me about it | ADHD Information

My son was just prescride 1/2 tablet of dexedrine.  I am scared to give it to him.  I don't know what to expect.

He dr. said she see a mild case of adhd.  Not so much the AD as the hyperness.  He is extremely chatty and moves around a lot.  Which has gotten him into trouble at school.  He doesn't do bad things, he just can't stop talking.

She is very conservative, which I like.  She wanted to start him on a low dose, once a day.  To see how it affects him, before possible going to a time released drug.  She said if he has problems, then it will be out of his system in 4-6 hrs vs. 10-12 hrs...

If your child is on dexedrine, can you tell me some of the side effects good and bad...

Thanks..

I'm sure you will get responses but please udnerstand that response to stimulant medication is very individual so you can't compare. I do know that normal side effects for all stimulants are the same but perhaps others will share their own expereinces.  The protocal is starting at the lowest dose. Good luckI'm sure by now you've checked this drug out (don't be
scared of stimulants- honestly they get a horrible rap
but are not nearly as bad as media and crazy groups make
them sound).

I actually just started this medication today. OH MY
GOD.

I've been on and off meds for about 2 or 3 years now. I
started with wellbutrin, then strattera, then adderall,
then adderall XR, then ritalin, blah blah blah. And I
settled on adderall XR for a while, but there were
always side-effects- which is usually why I'd end up
switching meds. As it stands, the adderall's benefit
was worth the side-effects. But I had resigned myself
to always dealing with side-effects.

I've been on dexedrine spanulse for a few hours now, and
I haven't had a single actual side-effect. I'm
completely calm and relaxed, no heart beating, no
agitation, (often on stimulants I'm physically calmer,
but inside I'm feeling more restless- just in a
different way than I normally feel). So I have to say-
this medication, for me at least, is a godsend. Let's
hope it keeps it up!

Thanks KDLMaj for your input.  I'm not sue the 1/2 tab of 5mg is even working for him.  He still seems pretty chatty.

I'm not sure if it has to get into his system before we see the full effect or not. But, I thought stimulants worked immediately.  He's almost 6 ans weighs 65lbs, so it may be to low of a dose for his size.

I have put in a call to the dr. to see if I can try him on a full tab this weekend before sending him to school...

Hi ranbel. The dose is very low but the dose for stimulant medication is not based on weight or age. The protocal for every patient is starting at the lowest dose and then trying different doses and meds until the right one is found for the patient. Your right in that when the medication is fully effective, results are seen right away. Unfortunately it can take a while before the right med and dose is found so hang in there and please keep us posted.

Yeah, this definitely feels like a "too low" issue. The
next logical step is certainly 5mg. Be careful though,
the line between "not enough" and "too much" is often a
very thin one. One thing that may be useful, if your
child is old enough for this, is to have the kid start a
journal. Have them right how they're feeling twice a
day (once on meds and once a few hours after they've
worn off). Compare them to get a feel for whether or
not it's helping and whether or not side-effects are
getting in the way.
