Methylin Er ? | ADHD Information
Does anyone take this med? Is it really long acting?My son is currently taking Ritalin LA (he takes it 2x per/day since he metabolizes it so fast) and has been doing great on it, but our insurance company suddenly decided it was non-preferred and so is going to cost us per/month! He also takes 2 other generic meds so that is going to total per/month. This is just crazy!
In any case, I'm looking into other possibly lower cost alternatives. The only brand names now covered under the lower copay are Adderral XR (already tried and was bad), Concerta (gave him bad rebound) and Daytrana (not sure he would like the patch). Methylin ER is listed as generic.
Ugh, I hate insurance companies and most likely we are stuck with this per/month for the rest of the school year because I'm scared to make any changes right now.
Methalin er is a generic form of Ritalin with a different delivery system. It is not long lasting 6hrs or so. same with the Ritalin LA. Methalyn Is usually given to youngerchildren who can't swallow pills.spamula39843.2653125
Why not Concerta the longest working with a booster? All in the same family. It lasts about 7-8 hours for us. My ds is 10. but with a booster when it runs out, alot of people do. Theese meds are so hard to get the right one.
I have no idea why my sons pediatrician has prescribed what she has prescribed. She has never even mentioned Concerta. I have noticed more lately the Ritalin SR does not seem to last more than 4 hours! And she wants us to use only that when we run out of the Ritalin LA!
I am going to experiment this weekend, with those two, (SR and LA) and see what I observe. I am going to go ahead and try just the SR tomorrow, while he is home with me all day, to see if I think we should do just the SR 2 times a day or not.
I want to see for myself what happens before I just do it and send him off to school.
Well my son had a very bad day at before/after school care and at school Friday.... so I decided to try the LA in the am and the SR around noon this weekend to see if that made any difference.
He had an excellent weekend. So I did the same for him today, for at school. Seems he does really good for a few days every time there's a change in his meds, and then he just goes backwards after a few days..... I am baffled, frustrated, irritated, etc........ I feel bad for him and everyone around him! He was downright nasty Friday with teachers, the lead teacher at school and the teachers at daycare, all because something went wrong earlier in the day.
I am worried he will be kicked out of at least the daycare here real soon.... I cannot wait until Thurs, when he goes to a child psychiatrist, hopefully they will see what the others are not, and help us get him on the right meds, and get him the right treatment!! He is extremely smart, and can be an angel...... unless you push the wrong button!!!
My son was put on Ritalin LA first, then when it didn't seem to work all day, and when the Dr realized he could swallow a pill she switched him to the Ritalin SR (generic-methylphenidate hydrochloride sustained release).
It is quite a bit cheaper, but I don't believe it lasts near as long as the Ritalin LA. I truly think it depends on how the individual metabolizes medicine. My son seems to metabolize it very quickly. He is now on the SR in the am and then the LA around noon.
Seems to be working, and the Dr now says after our LA is gone we are going to try SR both in the am and at noon. I am a little irritated with this, because what we are doing now seems to be working, yet we are going to change it again.
I guess I will see here in a few days if there is a difference or not! If it makes things worse for my son (again) I am going to have to have a long talk with the Dr!
I don't care about the cost, I just want my son to stop having to get his medicine changed, and going through all the changes he has had to go through! It is no fun!!
