Vyvanse not working | ADHD Information

Have the ADHD symptoms gotten worse since she started Zoloft?  My child has Generalized Anxiety Disorder, and when we added Zoloft, the anxiety improved massively, but the ADHD got worse.  The dr. said that unfortunately that happens sometimes to folks w/ ADHD who take Zoloft or any of the anti-anxiety meds.

However, if being too emotional first started while on a stimulant, I'd be concerned that the stimulant may have caused that side effect.  Did the dr. ever consider this possibility?  My child's anxiety was present before he started his stimulant, and actually his anxiety is much better while his stimulant is in his system vs. when it's worn off, so I know that's not the case for my child.

One last question.  Are you noticing the increased talkativeness and other ADHD symptoms all day long or only at certain times of the day?

Ok, new to this posting and I am just totally stressed out trying to help my 10 yr old ADHD daughter.  She was diagnosed at the age of 5 and we have tried Concerta, Straterra, Daytrana and now Vyvanse 70mg..  None of these really did the best.  They in another words, took the edge off.  Now with Vyvanse she seems to be still very hyper and non-stop talking.  Now around 7:00-7:30 pm she seems to wind down and then mellows out to go to sleep.  Now she has been on this for about 6 months now and at first she was also very emotional with it non=stop all day long, crying and get very upset over anything.  Due to her emotions being so much like this over the past several years, the doctor decided to add Zoloft the lowest dose.  Now this I believe has affected her sleeping.  She wakes up in the middle of the night and some mornings wakes up way earlier than she ever did. Also she is very small for her age with height and weight.  She is struggling really bad in two subjects at school and when I try to help her with her homework, she tells me she doesn't know how to do it.  Her last class of the day says that she is totally not focused and paying attention in her class.  HELP!  Any suggestions.  Also, does anyone know about stopping Vyvanse cold turkey or do you have to drop to lower dosage and wait a certain amount of time?

Welcome morrisajm.  Since your daughter was diagnosed at 5, I suggest that you get her a full medical  to rule out a medical reason  for her issues and also have her reevaluated by a child pyschiatrist to confirm or deny and ADHD diagnosis. ADHD medications should fully mange the symptoms of ADHD, not just take the edge off.  Many things can look like ADHD at such a young age and if ADHD medications are still not working at age 10, perhaps you need to look further.

When ADHD is gone untreated or not properly treated, academic problems are across the board, not in just a subject or two. Doctors should not give out medications without knowing why your daughter is having such emotional issues. Did you ever have her thyroid checked? I'm not a doctor and don't know your daughter but I think the doctor should determine the reason for your daughters emotional issues before writing you a script for zoloft. You can stop Vyvanese without weaning as it is not a blood level medication and it leaves the system not too long after the medication has worn off. Its of my opinion that in order to help your child, start by getting a second opinion. Please keep us posted

Hello

I agree with luvmykids02. IMHO, you should get a 2nd opinion....she may be over medicated.

I am a grown man 6'4" & 200lbs. My daily vyvanse dose is 50mg....and I don't take anything else. My doc said he raise the dose if I needed it but I haven't found it to be necessary. I've been taking it about 5 months +/-.
I used to take 300mg Wellbutrin too but that was when I was taking Adderall.

Vyvanse has been a god-send for me...and my wife. :)
I think the dosage may be too high but it may be the wrong med as well. If you are not seeing a remarkable difference at 70mg I would be concernedWhat you're describing happened with my son for the first 3 days he was
on the medication and they they stopped. Those sorts of side effects
shouldn't have continued after 2 weeks when she acclimated to the
medication.

There are other drugs out there. There are specialists who work
specifically with kids who don't respond to the "big 3".

If I were you, I would contact her doctor, tell him the meds are not
working, and ask for a recommendation to a pharmacological specialist.
My son didn't do well on the first drug he tried, he's now on Vyvanse and
it's working, but as soon as the first failure happened his doctor got us an
appointment with an ADHD specialist so we can make sure we've got the
right drug and also we can see if any other treatments, like therapy,
would help.

Best of luck with this!
