Hey, welcome,

Definitely document, document, document. Take your notes. Take the speech therapist's notes. Take teachers' notes. For the ADHD diagnosis to be reaffirmed, the behaviors have to be documented in more than 1 setting. We use Metadate (generic) and find it works well for us, but of course every kid is different.

I'm afraid that's about all I know--I don't have experience with the OCD. As a medical professional--could the tics be anything neurological in nature?

How is his eye contact, inside and outside the home?

Ritualistic behaviors like hand waving are not confined to OCD.Jessica N39852.9636226852Yesterday I received a phone call that woke me (I am a nurse that works nights).  It was from Lucas's speech teacher, Ms. Kristie.  She has been his speech teacher since he started public school at age 3 due to a speech delay (he had a total vocab of about 30 words at age 3).  Lucas is now in 3rd grade.  She called because she and his other 2 regular teachers are concerned about something they've been seeing.    Lucas recently started doing this bilateral hand waving that he says he can't control.  This is addition to rapid eye movement and blinking that started in the last 1.5 years and his having to repeat other's words (very softy to himself) - medical term for that is Echolalia.   I thanked her for the phone call and told her that we too have noticed the recent hand waving tic and that we would look into it.  I was hoping that this hand waving was just a bad habit that he would stop but at this point others are concerned and I need to have him evaluated. You know the "ignore it and it will go away theory".   My thoughts on this... ADHD/OCD - as he's been dx with ADHD already and had been on Metadate for the ADHD.  And possibly Tourette's as this is common with ADHD and OCD issues.  He had been on Metadate instead of the typical Ritalin or Adderall because of the tics he had and Ritalin and Adderall can increase tics. I am sure he needs to be back on some stimulant for the ADHD.   Other symptoms he has are:  implusivity such as not raising hand in class, not waiting his turn, ignores certain dangers like running ahead of us in parking lots despite our constant reminders of "Stay with us", difficulty staying on task with schoolwork and homework.  And depending on the child (some more immature children don't notice as much) he has some social issues due to his "tics" and impulsivity.   Lastly, he is just "different" from how our other 3 boys were since birth.  He quickly gained motor skills but he lacked in the verbal area and he's still in speech therapy.  He's a smart boy but struggles with school, esp reading comprehension.  He seems to have an incredible ability with math and already understands basic algebra (older son explained some of his homework to him one night and Lucas quickly started solving algebra problems).   Sooo.... as much as I tried to ignore this for a couple years it's back... or never went away.  I couldn't afford the medications when we lost the medical coverage that we had.  The Metadate was nearly 0 a month! It's probably a good thing because he's stuggling in school despite help at home and before and after school tutoring 2 days a week.  As I said,  he's a bright kid but I don't think he can concentrate more than a few minutes.   We have insurance coverage now and Lucas has an appointment with a new pedi for the 24th of the month.    Any thoughts?mommybess39850.3048842593

Hey, I'm a new mom to this ADD thing but has anyone ever mentioned Aspergers to you before?  My friend has a son with that has been dx with aspergers and has some  of the same characterists.  I would also recommend seeing a ped. neurologist.  Good luck.

Hi there,

Your son sounds like mine. Mine is now 11, but walked never crawled at 7 months. He was very motor driven, just in motion all the time. He also never talked. we did early intervention then a special preschool (who denied us services illegally ) but gave us an IEP instead of them getting a law suit for him for kindergarten.

He still has speech therapy. He also had OT for sensory integration. Do you suspect autism/aspbergers? Does he have friends, interested in playing with others? My son had horrible eye contact up until a few years ago, but all his therapists and us at home worked on that with him. He would hyperfocus on other things.

I also wonder if you have had the school evaluate him for an IEP or 504 plan. He really should be since he has adhd. He is entitled to special accommodations for testing etc.

But you mention him struggling in reading, etc - have him evaluated. He may need special help in those areas he is struggling in.

I am glad that the school contacted you and are aware.

Let us know how you are all doing!
