Hi Mom2ADHDBoy,
Thanks for your reply....The strange thing is, Ryan didn't seem really SICK with this sinus infection, except maybe at first. Within a few days of starting the Amox. he seemed to feel better and have fewer sinus issues, but the spaciness and lack of focus seemed to gradually get worse over the rest of the time he was on the antibiotic, which was 20 days total. But yes, I have noticed when he is really sick with something the ADD symptoms are worse, at least over a couple days.
I dont know there to be that kind of reaction with antibiotics when combined with ADHD meds but I do suffer from sinus problems myself and when they are acting up, I feel very spacy, unfocused and off balance. While your son was getting better, sinus problems do linger until the infection is fully gone which could be a while. Maybe it was the sinus issues causing the symptoms? I hope hes feeling better now.My son has been taking Concerta for ADD for 1.5 yrs and he recently finished a 20 day course of Amoxicillin, prescribed by his pediatrician for a sinus infection. After a few days on the Amox. we started noticing that Ryan seemed kind of spacey and his grades started slipping. He even says that he was feeling like he does when he forgets his Concerta.
I am planning to mention this to the pediatrician next time we see him, but I wanted to find out if anyone else has ever noticed this. I'm wondering if while the antibiotic was killing bad (and good!) bacteria in Ryan, if it was also "killing" whatever it is in the Concerta that helps with the ADD symptoms.
Thanks for sharing your experiences with me. I really hope we are not imagining all of this!!
I thought of something else. Maybe he was reacting to one of the inactive ingredients in the antibiotic? Does he have issues with dyes or anything else?
