Med break on weekend or not? | ADHD Information

My son started Vyvanse, and had crazy side effects the first day - he was
weepy and extremely talkative he couldn't force himself to stop talking.

After a week he had a sleepover at his grandmothers. She is anti-
medicine (she says I've put my son on speed). So she didn't give him his
pill, and kept him so late I couldn't do it.

The next day he had the same side effects - weepy and talkative - but
luckily it wasn't nearly as bad. But still, it's awful to watch him go
through that.

So, he's not going to skip pills unless there is a significant amount of
time and there are a few days out of school to start him back on the pills
so he can acclimate. I might have him stop over summer. We'll see - he's
having such a positive effect on his sociability I think I might keep him on
it this summer, too.My son now 10 dx at 7.5 takes meds everyday. The one day I forgot to give him his meds was crazzzzzy. I know alot of people do it for weight issues but my son is only 65 lbs and very small for his age. Our doctors do not reccomend med breaks as it affects every part of his life. He doesn't just need them for school, he needs them to function to his best ability everyday.Would greatly appreciate advice from those with more experience than me...

we started meds a week ago (8.5-year old son with ADHD and no other problems), taking Vyvance 50 mg. Had a rough first few days and better after.

Question is: should / can we not give him the pills on Sat. Sun. when no school and things are very manageable, or would he be better off with the meds everyday, including weekends?

Any thoughts from others on how they are handling?

He is taking the pills primarily for problems at school and has been doing well otherwise. we don't need the meds at home but will keep taking if it is better for him, for whatever reason.

THANKS MUCH!
Some kids' systems "reset" when given med breaks (ie. med-free weekends/vacations, etc...) and will start all over again with any side effects that may have been troublesome when meds were first started.

My own son has that problem, and I'm dreading tomorrow morning. He hasn't had his meds this weekend due to a stomach virus. One of our biggest problems is my son will say "well, you didn't give it to me this weekend, why do I have to take it now?"; which when all is said and done, is a very reasonable question for him to ask.

Our biggest issues are my son gets very nauseous with this med and even more so, when he doesn't eat when taking it. So, hopefully he'll be okay tomorrow and not have any problems at school. (he's gotten sent home from school for vommitting which was later to be determined from the meds, fun!)

I hope this helps .... my son is a picky eater, on or off the meds. So a weekend break to encourage him to eat, doesn't help in that aspect, and really, it does make our life a little bit simpler/easier if he just takes his meds every day.
Thank you both for your responses. It feels so much better to know we are not alone in this struggle. I too was very anti meds but after a really rough few months at school decided to give it a try. I am very much not at ease with them but if that is what will make his life easier - I will do that.

Adam was extremely talkative for the first few days - we literally couldn't get him to stop talking... and he played a specific 1-page piece on the piano for about 50 times each day when normally it requires a serious battle just to get him to practice piano for 5 minutes. He complained of dizziness and a sort of balance problem, possibly leg ache and had one evening of a terrible migraine. Things however seem much better now so we are sticking with it to see how it goes.

thanks again!
My son had the side effects for 3 days and then they subsided, except not
eating, he had no appetite during the day. After missing it one day he had
his side effects for one day and then they went away again.

My son had no dizziness or stomach aches (I hear that one's common too,
especially when taking the pill on an empty stomach), or migraines or leg
pains. Keep track of those and tell your son's doctor if it doesn't clear up
w/in two weeks. It could be that he needs to have his dose adjusted, or that
there could be something else to counteract it, like relaxation exercises or
something (you never know what's going to work - maybe he's dehydrated?)
Tell his doctor to see if there's a simple fix.
