Weekend breaks on Vyvance | ADHD Information
asdkidsarecool...Thank you.. I found your reply VERY helpful.
My daughter is similiar to your son in that she has always been a light eater. Getting her to eat was always a challenge, even as an infant.
I can understand the whininess "(but you didn't give me the meds this weekend, why do I have to take it now? ... which is understandable in him asking that)." and yes it would be perfectly acceptable and understandable for her to wonder that also. I don't want to go there with her on this topic yet. She needs this medicine so she can learn. I'll just keep her on the meds as we have been. Thank you for sharing! (((hugs))
My son eats at night. I plan on dinner at 7:30 right before he goes to bed.
Last night he ate a cheeseburger and fries and about a pint of strawberries.
Other than that he nibbled all day, because he wouldn't eat breakfast. Just
plan to have her eat before her pill and at the end of the day. When the
calories get in doesn't matter, so long as they get in there!
Hi everyone.
My daughter, 7, has been on Vyvance for 2 years now. It is working great when she is at school and has helped her concentration and focus. The only issue we have is she is never hungry and won't eat. I had her to the doctor yesterday and she is only weighing 43 pounds. I want her to gain some weight. I have heard of others who do not give their child their medicine while they are not in school on the weekends. Does anyone else use this approach with Vyvance? If you do use this approach, how is your child when they get their medicine on Monday? Are they the same as on Friday when they have the medicine in their body all week?
Any insight would be helpful.
Thank you for your time.
My son is almost 7yrs old and weighing the same as your daughter. He's also on Vyvanse (30mg).
We don't do med breaks to encourage eating, because #1 - it doesn't seem to make a difference (my son is naturally small, eats very little on OR off the meds, and has always had a hard time gaining/sustaining weight) and #2 - we start all over again with the whininess (but you didn't give me the meds this weekend, why do I have to take it now? ... which is understandable in him asking that).
For us, it just makes more sense and is easier for us, if we give the meds each day. It doesn't seem to make a difference with weight gain (my son actually weighs less now, than he did a year ago...). He had actually gained a couple of pounds, but had a stomach virus over the weekend so lost the 2lbs he gained. ARGH! It's a 2step forwards, 1.5 steps backwards for us.
What seems to help my son KEEP the weight on (maintain) is we started giving him carnation instant breakfast or nesquik in whole milk (he'd been previously drinking skim milk); he'll drink this 2-3times a day and sometimes more. He eats a lot of snacks when he gets home from school (lots of cheese, crackers, lunchmeat, etc...) and he eats lots of PB and apples or PB and crackers. He snacks on lots of healthy things with lots of good fats. We dont' force him to eat (it doesn't work to, and makes the eating situation worse). He LOVES spicy foods so we make sure we have those a few times a week and he SCARFS it down then.
Not much help ... but I totally commiserate!
