WELCOME Tcasbeer- You are far from being the only one here!!
My son's miracle med is concerta and guanfacine. He has been on it since just shy of 7. he is now 11, going on 12. His life wouldn't be as awesome if it wasn't for these two combined.
Our son has also made a lot of progress. He suffered labeling early on and is still living in down in our small town. He also has a speech delay and was diagnosed with sensory integration, which is very similar to adhd and I think is the reason for his speech issues.
Please keep reading posts and offering any advice as we would like to learn from you as well.
Im new to this site. I have a 10yr old that is ADHD, ODD, OCD, ED, and Bipolar (mood swings) mainly. I have two other children they are fine my oldest is 16 adn just flys by in school he is a whatever for him my youngest is 8 and she is just a drama queen but very good in school . So as you can see my 10yr old is the middle child I new from day one he would be my challenging child . He is my texas tornado by the time he hit kindergarden I had battled putting him on meds not sure about the meds at this point all I new of was Ritalin and was not going there seen the side affects on my exhusbands side with a nephew. But thanks to my doctor we sat down and went over a list of issues Chawker was having in school and started him on Strattera we maxed out on it by the summer then did Adderal we maxed this by the begining of second grade then we started the Daytrana Patch with Abilify at nite and WOW the difference was amazing he went from a C student to a A student and we have been on this for two yrs as of now we stared Vyvanse today adn my son came home and said he had the most amazing day and instead of me sitting with him for 1 1/2 hrs to do homework we got done in 20mins he has had the best day and I am hoping it continues . This is a new med for me and I have been researching all day so if any one knows of anything about his med than I would love to hear it . So far this is positive and its only been 1 day But I keep a good routine around here and even my other two kids follow it so things works and he seems to be ok .Just wondering if this med is as great as it says it is. I have spent so much time at his school that we even have our own classroom to go to daily this is the first day in a month that I have not been to the school so I am confused and lovin it at the same time . thanks for listening I have tried other sites talking to parents and they were a joke so I hope this is better I feel like I am the only one and then I found this site.
mom exausted and ready for a break in being a teacher .
Welcome tcasbeer- I have a 10 year old son who takes Concerta and Zoloft and is doing well at this time except for some impulsivity issues. It is nice to meet you and Although our kids do not have the same problems, I have my own list. looking forward to hearing from you soon.My almost 10 yo daughter has been taking Vyvanse for the past 2 years, and it works great! We were on Adderall, and she was having to take so much of it that it was almost not worth it. It also did not seem to last as long. She has improved very much, but there are still some school issues. A lot of her problems seem to come in Math when they are covering the same material over and over.
Here in Mississippi, they have introduced a new standardized test to "help us catch up to the rest of the nation". We have been told we must give these children tests every 4 and 8 weeks for District level, and then turn around and give 9 weeks tests. So figure, a test in Language, Reading, and Math 3 times every 9 weeks equals about 12 major tests, plus the regular weekly tests in between. Then in May they take the MAJOR test. It's no wonder our ADD/ADHD kids are being left in the dust!
Sorry, I'll back off my soapbox now!
Bad day!
By the way, I teach, so I know EXACTLY what my daughter is going through!
