So frustrated | ADHD Information

Today he refused to even practice with chocolate pudding and sprinkles.  I ended up doing the "shove it down my throat method"  He agreed to it but really didn't like it after we were done, he said I choked him cause he gagged a little.  But the medicine did go down and stay down.  I am having surgery tomorrow so and DH is taking the week off work so I think Tues we will be going to the Dr to see if they can put him on the patch cause I don't think he would take liquid either.  This kid is super stubborn.I swear today was even worse.  I think a lot of his problem is mental.  I know he does have a sensitive gag reflex and if he feels texture he chews cause he thinks he will choke.  But today we decided to practice with sprinkles first then the medicine.  He could get the pudding with sprinkles down without chewing as long as it was very small bites but when I put the medicine on there (which is smaller than the sprinkles) he physically could not swallow and almost threw up.  DH is at the store now and I told him to pick up some mini m&m's so we can practice and hopefully move onto pills soon.  Tomorrow I'm gonna try mixing the meds in with the sprinkles and telling him we are practicing and see if he can take it.  Then I will know for sure if it's mainly mental.I agree it is probably a mental anxiety thing as it was in my son, now 10. It turned out he struggled with the Focalin Because he didn't like the way he felt on it (Zombieish) but he could not express it to anyone. Finally he refused to take it. He then came around and has taken Vyvance, and now swallows Concerta. He has come along way it hasn't been easy. After only a week I'm getting so frustrated I don't know what to do.  My 5 year old son was put on Focalin XR, his first adhd medication ever.  The effects have been WONDERFUL however getting him to take it every morning is quickly turning into a nightmare.  He has what seems to me the most sensitive gag reflex of any child ever.  Even when the capsule is opened and sprinkled on pudding, applesauce or yogurt he has trouble with it.  If there is any texture he feels the need to chew which is not supposed to be done with the time release capsules.  This weekend we are going to spend a while trying to teach him how to swallow pills. I've been trying but so far it hasn't been working.  It's only been a week so I'm not going to give up this early and try to switch him to something else but if I have to fight and threaten every day then I might have to see if there is something else he can take.  Anyone else ever had this problem?

Maybe you can give him an immediate incentive if he swallows the medicine without chewing?  That might help him focus harder on taking it properly?

If that doesn't work and he can't swallow pills, Methylin is a liquid stimulant.

My son has me "shove the pill down his throat" LOL. (That's his description.)
I hold it between my index & middle fingers (like chopsticks) and drop it
down behind his tongue. He swallows it immediately, and then drinks water
afterward.I know how you feel as my son will only swallow 2 pills each am. He inspects them to see if they are different. When he was younger we tried focalin because you can open the capsules and sprinkle the beeds onto food (we used ice cream) He still hated it and that's why we went off meds for a while. Then came Vyvanse which you can dissolve in water or other things and he would drink it down. The vyvance was horrible for him so now he will finally swallow Concerta. I do not know what changed. There is also metadate or methalin that comes in a liquid for younger kids I think. It is also Ritalin basedalot of people use mini m&m's to practice swallowing.OMG -I had the same problem with my son! With the same meds too lol. He was a smart booger - he knew it was in there. I found a secret - a Oreo cookie. Not kidden - open it up with out him seeing you - sprinkle the meds on the white and smear it in with your finger and put it back together! They love cookies and will down it - no problems!! Let me know how this works - mine is almost 7 and he just started swallowing little pills. He is on Regular Folican now
