Tenex while taking strattera | ADHD Information

My child uses Tenex, but not Strattera.  He originally took Tenex combined with Focalin XR, and now he takes it with Metadate CD.  For the first few days, it made him tired, but his body quickly adjusted.  He started w/ .5 mg in the afternoon, then we added .5 mg in the morning, then we increased to 1 mg in the afternoon, then we increased to 1 mg in the morning.  All was slow increases (about 1 week between changes), and blood pressure checks with every change.

Besides decreased impulsivity and hyperactivity, Tenex increased my child's appetite some.  He now was eating something for lunch!  It still was less than the other kids ate, but it was a big improvement that he was eating at all!

Tenex also allowed us to eliminate melatonin.  He'd previously needed that to reduce hyperactivity enough that he could fall asleep.

My child's had a rare side effect of Tenex.  We've found that he has to take it by 4 PM or it causes him to wake up overnight.  He kept waking up betw. 12 AM and 3 AM.  W/ giving it earlier, we eliminated this problem.

When we recently increased the PM dose to 1.5 mg (to try to help control his anxiety more and keep the Zoloft dose down), we again had issues with overnight awakenings.  The dr. had us give Benadryl at bedtime for a week.  It's now been 2 weeks at the higher dose, and I think his body has adjusted and he's sleeping well again.  My child's dr. is a medication wizard, and he said that it's rare, but some people have very vivid dreams, sleep disruption, and/or sleep walking due to Tenex.  Like I said, my child had sleep disruption, but we got rid of this problem by giving the med. earlier.

HTH!

I am new to the forum and came across this site while researching Tenex.  My 8 year old son has struggled for years in school with inability to sit still and accomplish a complete assignment.  As most describe, although the teacher doesn't think he is paying attention he could come home and tell me every detail.

We finally sought the help of a Behavior Therapist who sent us to the Pediatric Pshychologist and he put him on Strattera (now up to 40 mg every morning) with great results but his impulsiveness crept back in later in the afternoon.  At basketball practice I would cringe because while they were trying to practice he would just have outbursts of just making crazy sounds and getting his homework done is sometimes sporadic but his day at school seems very productive and the teacher seems to see a 180* difference.  The Dr recommended giving him a 1/2 a milligram of Tenex around 5 pm.  Has anyone had this regimen and what benefits and side effects did you experience?  I don't want to make him a zombie.
