Finally some good news | ADHD Information

Well we had a parent teacher conference for our son who is 4 1/2 for his pre school.  This whole year has been a whirlwind for us because he did have a hard time adjusting to school and all the structure that went into it.  Also cooperating, sharing, not blurting things out, taking turns and sharing.  His teacher (who I adore and am greatfull for) was wonderful in keeping us updated on how he's doing.  By december he was doing "better".

Well, we finally had the conference.  My husband and I went.  Everything is great!  It turns out that David is in the top of his class academically and they felt that he was very ready for kidergarden (which was a major concern in the beginning that he wouldn't be, and we felt it was academically along with socially).  That he was 1 of 3 children that knew all his upper and lower case letters, shapes, numbers and patterns front to back. I was so happy and proud because this whole year was a bunch of "he's not this, he's not that"  However, there is still the impulsive issue.  David is VERY impulsive.  He is not on medication as of yet.  We want to see how he'll do without it for as long as we can however there is moments were I feel he REALLY needs it.  He is also VERY behind socially.  He acts like a 2 1/2 year old most of the time rather than a 4 1/2 year old.  Still getting into things constantly.  For example he took the febreeze today and spray it all in his hair and all over the bathroom floor and countertops.  He knows better, but just cant help himself.

just wanted to share the good news.  I think as ADHD parents, when we get great feedback it keeps us smiling for days.  Thats all we ask for.

Great news!  It sounds like, at this point, he's smart enough to compensate for the ADHD and do well academically.

You sound like you're monitoring whether or not he needs meds.  I'll say this much:  remember to look at the whole picture and not just the academics.  If he's having problems making and keeping friends and/or if his behavior is causing him to get in trouble a lot, then I'd consider it.  My child was bright enough to compensate for his ADHD, but the social and behavioral piece are what brought him down tremendously.  W/ meds, he's now doing great in all areas.

I didn't mean to turn this post into a downer, just wanted to make sure you consider all angles.  Congrats on getting the wonderful news about your ds' academic skills!  It's so great to hear good things about our children!

Thanks!!

Yes, husband and I always said that if david is struggling either academically, socially, or emotionally (example he thinks he's "stupid" or "weird") then we will consider the meds.  He does get into trouble alot at home right now because he just gets into everything.  But as of right now, were just gonna observe and see.

Congratulations to your son and kudos to you mom :) Your getting very good advice here. ADHD is not an academic problem. Most with ADHD have average to above average intelligence. Academics may become a problem when children enter 3rd grade because the work becomes more abstract and the child is expected to work more independantly. In order for ADHD to be diagnosable the problems must affect all areas of life. Its great that you have such a handle on things very early on because if addtional interventions are needed your getting an early start. Thanks for sharing such great news!!!!!
