Lack of resources for adult ADD | ADHD Information
Why does it seem that there's tons of information for parents of children with ADD/ADHD but practically nothing for adults? Do drug manufacturers and researchers and doctors think that everyone just grows out of it or that the medication "cures" this life-debilitating "thing"? Are parents just so flippin eager to just mellow out a kid who is really just normal (and that's why there's a flood of info about it for them)? Do adults just accept this condition and just deal with it? I was diagnosed with hyperactivity (yes, that's all they called it in the 70s) as a kid, took dexedrine for three years and then was abruptly taken off of it (i don't know why). For the next 35 years, I've struggled.
I am going to ask my doctor about meds next week when I see her because I'm truly coming to terms that my ADD is real and that it impacts my life in a negative way. So, I wanted to arm myself with information first. But I can barely find any information regarding adults/women with ADD. All the articles talk about are teachers and school. Well, I'm an adult with a BOSS and a JOB. Similar but different from a kid.
If anyone has any resources about medication, ADD and Women, please, please email me via private messenger! Thanks.
I know what you mean. My favorite was the info pamphlet that came with one of the meds I was trying (I think it was Daytrana) that said, look for these side effects in your child. DOH!
I think if you're exploring meds, you should definitely do it with a psychiatrist rather than a physician or internist. The more general doctors just don't have the breadth of experience with meds and side effects. Plus, since most of the helpful ADD meds in particular are controlled stimulants, and since ADD in adults (especially inattentive type) is not generally well understood, a lot of physicians might try to talk you out of trying them.
I'm on my second shrink, but I think I'm finally closing on the right meds to treat my adult-diagnosed ADD-inattentive type and concurrent depression. Maybe if you're picking a doctor, you could poke around on the internet or among your local area to find one who is especially qualified in treating ADD. I actually ended up on Provigil, which is actually used for sleep disorders but also helps with ADD... the standard Ritalins, etc., upset my stomach too much, and made me feel like I was on speed. It's taken me almost a year to get these worked out.
Good luck! Hope you get an answer quickly!
Same here. Come Wednesday, I hope my Shrink has packed a lunch, because I am going to have it out with him. I have been found to have true ADHD for 8 years, even through the old classification was LD and I have been found with it since the age of 4.
I have felt I have been getting the run around, he is not telling me the whole story, and I going to get somethings changed even if I have to check into the Physic Ward to get a whole battery of new testing done.
I have found at least 8 ADHD doctors here in town and I am going to get him to set me up with one of them for just the ADHD and get my meds adjusted for just the ADHD.
