INCREASING the Vyvanse ..... | ADHD Information
Well, we tried 5 days of the decreased dosage of Vyvanse (initially started out on 30mg in December, we went to 20mg for 5 days last week when my son's rebound behaviors were HORRIBLE). Was hoping that it was maybe the meds were a bit too high, but .... the behaviors GOT WORSE.
Last night I sat on the floor with him in a cradle position because he was hitting, kicking, punching, smacking, biting me - because I was trying to get him to stand in the corner for doing something he was told not to do.
Called the doctor and he said we'll INCREASE the dosage to see if that helps (which, it should....). The decrease DID NOT work so we'll see.
Hoping this helps ... the afternoon/evenings have been AWFUL!!! The mornings got better, which leads me to believe our issues have been the lack of sleep my son was experiencing. We increased the clonidine to .2mg (from .1mg) and that has helped tremendously.
Anyways.... wish us luck!
Well good luck to you guys! After spending 1 year messing with the Vyvance, we decided to give up and go on to Concerta. the Vyvanse was too much for my son and he became very unruly and never obeyed anything. Now on Concerta he is doing better. He eats and sleeps better, his teacher says he shows no behaivior problems at school.but I am seeing them at home like he refuses to do his homework says he can't remember anything. never brings stuff home for homework. AARRGGHH> I sure hope it gets better for you and yours!well, we've been on the increased Vyvanse (40mg) for 3 days now and he definitely doesn't seem as volatile as he was prior to upping the dosage.
His school behavior wasn't a problem on either the 20mg, 30mg OR 40mg (but without meds he couldn't concentrate and was very inattentive and got in trouble for incomplete classwork and LOTS of talking), it was just a HUGE difference in his at home behavior....
I don't expect my child to listen to me 100% of the time (because he is, well, a CHILD) but when he comes after me and is smacking me in the face and being downright violent (behavior that is NOT LIKE HIM, AT ALL) I knew SOMETHING had to change.
Hopefully we'll be able to stick it out on the Vyvanse at this dosage for a while. He's a little bitty guy (weighed 42lbs, ugh I hate the bouncing weight!) and is almost 7yrs old. I know these meds aren't weight-based, but symptom-control based, but still.
We'll see .... we have his 7yr checkup next month so if we can hold out til then we'll see.
My 10.5 year old was on Vyvanse (not sure of dosage - maybe 40 mg? - but only the one level initially prescribed) and his moods/behavior/etc BECAME UNBEARABLE! This was in the second month of taking it. First 6 weeks were fine. He would yell, curse, kick, scream, ALL OF IT - EVERY DAY after school through bedtime. One week of that was ENOUGH.
Good news is we switched to Concerta 36 mg (he weighs 60 lbs) and INSTANTLY he was his old self. Been on the Concerta now for 8 days and still going strong.
Every child is different but it reminded me that something might seem to work for a while but then it doesn't anymore - and we have to recognize it right away instead of suffering or assuming it is not the meds....
thanks for the insight Keeppositive ....
so far, the increased dosage to 40mg of Vyvanse seems to be working better. My son has always been a very intense child so I think some of the intensity is the meds.
IF things get worse again, I'll be on the phone with the doctor. though, it DOES sound like my son's symptoms after school are just like YOUR sons. That is some good food for thought.
Thanks again
Let me know how it goes. I will keep you updated as well!
