I think some people do a short acting dose later in the day. Hopefully someone will chime in on this for you. Also, if you haven't already, try searching this on the forum. I know rebounding has come up before and there were some interesting responses (seems like someone found a little caffeine helped with rebounding - but I can't remember for sure).
My DS wasn't hungry on his meds and sleeping was an issue too. Nothing that we couldn't deal with but it was there. He still slept and he grew fine just found it harder to fall asleep and maybe didn't grow as fast. Let him eat when hungry (ie. maybe after the meds wear off let him have a really good evening snack. I think the trampoline is a great idea! Make sure he jumps for a length of time, consistently. Let me know if you find the trampoline helps - I'm curious.
Welcome GZM. Its so great to hear that your son is doing so well :) Stimulant meds should go in quietly and leave quietly. If the rebound continues and nothing else works talk to the doc about a short acting stimulant. That usually eliminates rebound for most :) Good luck and please keep us postedHi there. My son just started taking 10 mg of Adderall XR. He's 5 and it's worked very well for him at school. He's had so much success in the past 2 weeks while on it that his confidence has grown so much. However, he's rebounding pretty hard around 3-4 pm. He's an insane person! What is your experience with this type of thing and did it improve over time? Thanks!Yes, my DS's rebounding did improve over time but it was over a long time. One thing that helped us (we discovered completely by accident) was swimming laps ( I know this won't help a lot of people but just in case your child is one that could do this...). My DS joined a winter swim team when he was 8 and practice was at 4:00pm twice a week. Practice involved swimming laps for about an hour. One day it occurred to me that on the days he had practice out evenings were sooo much better - that back and forth swimming in the pool seemed to really help the rebound. Eventually he seemed to sort of outgrow the rebound hyperactivity and things were better. Then we he hit puberty he started getting really moody when the meds wore off. Anyway, maybe you can try some kind of activity - family bike ride or walk for 30 minutes or so.
I know how frustrating it can be. Hang in there and good luck! Oh yea, one thing that helped me deal with the rebound was the fact that my child was doing so well in school with the meds - better to be crazy at home than at school!
Thanks Greyhoundmom. Your last point about him doing well at school being the most important thing is what we've been telling ourselves. I am hoping the side effects get better with time. He is also NOT hungry one bit. We just got a trampoline in our backyard and he's been jumping and jumping in the afternoons so maybe that will help too, which was our plan. I'm wondering what to do if there is something planned on a day that I know will coincide with his rebound. I can't just hide away every evening but I also don't want another dose every day. Does anyone do a short-acting dose only for special events? How much worse is bedtime?
