DS Needs Help Falling Asleep | ADHD Information

Hi there.   My son has been taking Adderall XR for about 3 weeks now.  We are seeing great results and school and his appetite has actually returned a bit.  But he can NOT fall asleep.  We meet with dr. next week so I will ask her but I'm curious to know what you all do about this?  Does your child take something else?  If so, what and how much?  Any other tips you can give me?  He's only 5 and should be going to bed between 8-9 but he's up until 10 or 11 or even later now!  Help!My son since he was 8 used 5 mg. we started at 3mg and went up from there. he is 101/2 now and 5 still works for him. you can go up higher on the dose because of the stim, It is safe. How old is he?

How much melatonin do you use?  We actually have tried that and at first it worked like a charm and then in the past few days, it hasn't.  Do they get used to it?  I only gave him about 1 mg or less.    Maybe I need to give him more now that his dosage of Adderall is a bit more than the first week.  Now that I think about it, it worked for us the first week and he was only taking 5 mg of Adderall and now he's taking 10 so maybe more melatonin is needed.  Thanks for replying!

I am all for the melatonin over the counter. We buy our over the internet in Kal brand Lozenges lemony sweet tating 5mg ( you can always beak them for lower dose) But I have found they work far better than any others I have tried and my son has tried. I buy them from Vitanet.com .

At the dr. appointment, I'd ask whether the dr. thinks melatonin is a good idea for your child.  Many people use melatonin to help fall asleep.  Melatonin is a substance the body naturally produces, and some people need a supplement of it to help them fall asleep.

Our son is on concerta AND guanfacine/tenex. It helps relax him. We have no sleep issues on 90 mgs of concerta. My 9 yr old son is on 10 mg focalin XR and takes 1.5 mg clonidine at night--it helps him sleep and suppresses his tics.
