Sorry you are going through such a hard time. I hope there is some way you can get in to see the specialist sooner and get the help you need.
You might want to look at the "alternatives and complementary meds" forum here on this message board. There is a lot of information to wade through. Some people believe that diet changes have helped their children, but it is definitely NOT a quick or easy thing to do. Some, like me, believe that some nutritional supplements are helpful, but again these are not overnight miracle cures. When it comes to alternatives, there is also, unfortunately, a lot of worthless stuff and lots of people who just want to make money by selling stuff to desperate people.
My daughter takes omega 3s and phosphatidyl serine supplements. There are a couple of long threads about these on the Alternatives and Complementary meds forum.
Best of luck!

Welcome mam78. Unless your child has a specific allergy or sensitivity to food, there is no speical diet for ADHD as its not a nurtrional problem. Its best for your child to be on a healthy diet like anyone else but again, unless certain foods are contributing to the hyperness, modifying a diet won't help. However, we are here to be supportive and help you with any questions or concerns you have so please feel free to post anytime as our members  can give you a lot of tips and strategies to help with the behavioral issues in the mean time. Has your son been formerly diagnosed and if so why hasn't he started on a treatment plan already?

Try 1000 mg daily omega-3 with a ratio of at least 4:1 (EPA/DHA)and magnesium up to 6x his body weight, but starting low. Maybe coffee? Watch out for other stuff, it can actually make the situation worse, especially when you get into the amino acids.UNtil you can get to the doctor, try removing all dyes, artificial flavors, preservatives.  Dyes are huge in causing my son to become hyper.  The other foods that make my DS extremely hyper are those high in salicylates (apples, grapes, peaches, tomatoes, etc.).  Not all ADHD kids are sensitive my mine sure is!  I hope you can find something to help until you can get to a doctor. Why is it taking so long to get help? Can't your pediatrician help you to start with?
