Please Help with EEG results!!! | ADHD Information

Share
DD started facial tics (blinking) in Feb. We stopped ADHD meds. Tic
continued. We had an EEG last week and it was ABNORMAL---(left temporal
lobe spikes). The ped. said he usually doesn't see abormal EEG with tics.
Now I'm worried about epilepsy. Could she have it and we didn't know it?
We don't see neurologist for diagnosis until end of April. That leaves 4 wks
for me to wait feeling stressed and anxious. I don't know anyone who's had
an abnormal EEG. There is nobody I can ask.   Now, the ADHD is NO big deal
compared to what we're dealing with now. This is so stressful. Why do docs
make us wait soooo long for answers.
Thanks for any input.happy2bemom, I know how frightening it is to have to wait this length of time when your not exactly sure whats going on. In the mean time call the office and ask them if they can fit your in if there is a cencellation before your next scheduled appointment. Also ask if you could speak to the doc about test results over the phone before your scheduled appointment becasue your riddled with worry Insist on having the doc call you back.. You should not to have to wait 4 weeks I'm so sorry your going through this Please keep us psoted. Hugs to youluvmykids has some great suggestions.
I have little experience with EEGs so don't know if I'll be much help, but I'll share my experience.
My daughter had an EEG back when she was 5 and had been recently diagnosed with ADHD. My step-mom (who has a nursing degree) had noticed her staring into space and had wondered if she could perhaps be having "absence" or "petite mal" seizures which can sometimes be misdiagnosed as inattentive-type ADHD. So we got a referral to a neurologist.
My daughter's EEG was consistent with something else called Benign Rolandic Epilepsy. However my daughter never had any of the symptoms of Benign Rolandic, which the doctor said would be very noticeable. So we did nothing more in regard to this. Benign Rolandic is normally outgrown at puberty anyway, which is where my daughter is now, and she is doing great.
So, I'm no expert, but I think there are a number of conditions that can result in an "abnormal" EEG and many are not serious at all. I would try not to stress out too much. If your daughter is not showing serious symptoms than I would guess that there's nothing too serious going on. Also, epilepsy is not the end of the world. Both my kids have friends or acquaintances who take meds for epilepsy and they are living perfectly normal lives.
Hopefully you will get some answers soon that will put your mind at ease.
You guys are so nice. The replies felt like support and hugs through
the computer. I have been able to get an appt for next week...yeah!
And, the blinking has decreased significantly..another yeah!
I have researched her EEG results on the internet for literally hours
and it keeps popping up "benign epilepsy or rolandic epilepsy."
Evidently kids can have this and never have any symptoms. Another
thing to be thankful for is that she is passing all classes without any
ADD medicine. That is a major accomplish itself! I wouldn't have
chosen to not medicate, but since we had to stop it's good to see her
make it. Okay, she may be squeaking by, but at least she's above
water.
Thanks again.
