Tenex and Concerta | ADHD Information

Just wondering.....   if anyone has tried the two together.......   we just started the Tenex, 1/2 mg in the morning and at lunchtime.

Here's the question...  Could the morning dose be not working as well because I give it with the Concerta??

My son has had bad mornings at school, but his afternoons have been good.  So that makes me wonder about how I am giving the meds in the morning.  I give him both the Concerta and the Tenex right when he gets up, usually about 6:30 am, so they have enough time to start working before school.

Then he gets the other dose of Tenex before lunch at school.  So I wonder if I need to give him the meds differently in the morning.  Any suggestions/experience/advice for this??

Thanks!!

My daughter does the Concerta/Tenex combination.    We do 1 mg of Tenex in the AM and 1 mg in the evening.    Do we don't do a mid day or afternoon dose.   The amount she is one keeps her pretty even keel and helps with tic management.  For us,  the time isn't critical, but the dosage split between the AM/PM is best.  (We tried .5 in the AM and 1.5 in the evenings.   She was more irritable in the evenings when we were on that dosing.)

If your afternoons are working better than the mornings,  it could be that the initial release of the Concerta is not high enough.    Concerta release 20% (or maybe 22% I can't remember for sure right now) and then the rest through out the day.

Oh, no, we weren't told that about the Tenex.  I thought it worked pretty quickly like the Concerta or Ritalin.  He seems to be doing better, so maybe it has started working already.  As of today he has been on it for 1 week.  So, maybe it will get even better!      I do believe we are now on the right track, finally!!

I saw some benefits really quickly, but the teachers and I didn't see the full benefits for a few weeks.  It also went in reverse.  When we experimented w/ discontinuing it, we saw decreasing benefit over the weeks, but after about 3 weeks it was substantially worse than at the beginning of the experiment.

That is great to hear.  I see my son getting better already, still having a few issues, so it's good to hear that it may get even better as the medicine gets into his system.  Maybe we won't have to go up on the Concerta quite yet.  When my daughter first started Concerta at 18 mg,  she wasn't getting enough in the AM,  so I would supplement with a short acting dose and she as also a bear in the afternoons.   We increased to 27 mg, and the dosing was much better.   She been on this dose for 15 months, and we have been debating increasing her to 36 mg most of the school year.  Despite some issues, she is generally doing well and getting good grades, so we have left it.

Did the dr. tell you that it takes about 3 weeks to build up in their system and to see the full effectiveness of Tenex?  Perhaps it's too early to evaluate how well it's working?

My child does 1 mg of Tenex in the morning and 1.5 mg of Tenex in the afternoon.  Afternoon dose is higher b/c it helps control his impulsivity and hyperactivity at night after stimulant wears off.  It also helps w/ decreasing his anxiety (which is greater after the stimulant wears off).  I should say that my child also takes Metadate CD, which is in the methylphenidate family like Concerta is.  He also takes Zoloft for Generalized Anxiety Disorder.

That is exactly what I was thinking this morning.  It is the way the Concerta is released, he's not getting enough in the morning.  We have discussed this with the psychiatrist, and that is one thing we were thinking about, was adding something short acting in the morning, since the Concerta works that way.

That will probably be our next step, unless the mornings somehow get better before we go back.  Maybe he is just right on the Concerta 36mg, but just needs a little something extra for the mornings.

Thanks!

I think that is what we will be doing also, is giving him something with it in the mornings, since he has such trouble in the mornings.  His afternoons are great.  He was an absolute joy last night!  I just hope it lasts!

I am actually seeing a big improvement in him myself.  He is polite, helpful, and is more of a sweet boy more often.  He is just having a little trouble still at school in the mornings.  We will get it right here shortly, I believe!!
