Thinking we need to switch meds.... | ADHD Information

thanks mom2ADHDboy...

Ya know, seeing how much EASIER my son melts down
WITHOUT the meds and how he has a lot harder time
focusing and being attentive, it's quite obvious he
still needs the meds. I did let him go the weekend,
Monday and Tuesday without meds and lets just say, NOT a
pretty picture. It's obvious he needs it. He's so much
more in control when he's on them and while he still has
an attitude problem, I think that's just him being his
usual, intense, precocious self.

We've been trying different ways of delivery for the
meds ... pudding was okay this morning but he still
fought me on it. We tried it in peanut butter (no go,
not even on a sanwich) and we've tried it mixed into
water (I don't even think he got more than 2 sips down
before refused anymore). He suggested a small bowlful of
orange sherbet ice cream in the AMs to mix the meds in.
I think that might actually work with NO tantrums AND he
LOVES the sherbet. We'll try it tomorrow and see how he
does.

He's a pistol! You'd think his older brother would be
the hard to deal with one because of his autism, but
that is SO not the case. The little one knows how to
push my buttons!!

Tough issues.  Do you have Spring Break coming up?  Will you be staying home and not having company?  If so, perhaps you could do a trial of seeing how he does w/o Vyvanse for several days when you can observe him closely?

If you decide you want to use it again, did he do OK w/ 20 mg pills dissolving in the milk?  If so, maybe the dr. could write the rx as taking two 20 mg pills?  Do you pay a copay so it's a flat amount whether it's one pill per day or two pills per day?

My younger son has been on Vyvanse since December. He started out on the 30mg dosage but we upped to 40mg in February due to impulsivity creeping back.

For whatever strange reason, the 40mg dosage of Vyvanse doesn't dissolve in liquid like the 30mg dosage did. It's like the compound of powder was made completely different and it just won't dissolve.

What this means for us is, I have a son who probably 30% of the time absolutely REFUSES to take his medication because he can see it floating in the milk. If it would just dissolve completely it would be okay, but it doesn't.

Now.... the other thing is, the few days he hasn't taken his meds during the school week, he does okay at school. School work gets completed and he gets his sticker for the day. No problems with talking and doesn't get in trouble.  (I don't fight him over it on the weekends, though I probably should... he DOES do better when ON the meds). SO, does he really need the meds then?

I'm wondering if a liquid med work better? He's more receptive to liquid meds, or even chewable meds. This crap of dealing with the med not dissolving in milk (approved by our doctor, btw) is driving me crazy!

Help!

Also ... for instance, this morning my son refused to take his med. So, I told him that he would lose his Bakugan (his current favorite toy). Should I actually take them away, as I don't know that he can totally help the refusing of taking the meds?
