right brain/left brain | ADHD Information
I don't think most schools would test for that, but some teachers are open to these ideas, and some teachers are even right-brained themselves.
My daughter also tested as right-brained. I read (well, skimmed through) a book called Right-Brained Children in a Left-Brained World and it did give me some insights into how my daughter learns and thinks. There is also an interesting and informative website; I think if you google "visual-spatial" you will find it.
I'm glad you reminded me of this!
I just gave my son a test and he came up right brained. Left brained means
he's very logical and sequential, right brained means scattered and taking in
the whole picture, sort of the opposite of organized. It describes him to a T.
Wonder if the school would test for that? Doubt it would make any
difference. Although it would be really cool to see a classroom of all right
brained kids. The teacher would have to be nothing short of amazing.I love that book. I have loaned it to others. I have even
recommended it to my students' parents. I think we, as teachers,
undervalue kids' individual learning styles. I would recommend
anyone with an ADD/ADHD child get that book, since most of them
will test right-brained. Being right-brained is also a gift! Most of
the creative people and problem solvers in the world are right-
brained. They tend to not get bogged down by details, but look at
the whole picture and be much more intuitive. (Of course, when it
comes to school, details are important and it does not always seem a
gift in that setting.)
This is interesting. Can someone tell me how I go about testing my son for this?Sarahbell,
The book Right-Brained Children in a Left-Brained World has tests in it. The test is just a questionnaire of sorts, and, if I remember correctly, the book has an adult version and a child version, and even a version for a parent to do for a younger child. I think I tried to do the parent version for my daughter, but I found many questions hard to answer for her, so when she did the test herself, I learned a lot about her.
I think you can find this type of "test" online too. Google "visual-spatial". It's not like a formal evaluation or diagnosis, but it can give you insight into how your child thinks and learns.

Thanks for the info! I'll have to check it out!
Sarahbell, You're welcome!
IMH{right brained}O, every school...elementary on up to and including college...should ensure that every student know their learning style. How else can a student make best advantage of their learning opportunities? With the cost of college these days, I think every college ought to require learning style testing and orientation for all incoming freshman who don't know their learning style and how best to take advantage of it (and avoid it pitfalls). Otherwise, how can they ethically keep taking money from these students (and students' parents)?!!
