Have you tried Melatonin? it is a natural sleep aid both I and my son use it. he never slept a wink until his pediatrician reccomended the Melatonin.
my son is 10 and 70 lbs he takes 5mg for the last three years. It works great. 30 minutes before bed I give him a lozenge (Melt-away) and it tastes like candy, I use it for myself at 10mg. Some people feel more comfortable starting at a much lower dose but we needed the 5 mg and yes it will always be a problem on stimulants most likely.
I but Kal Melatonin 5mg lozenges from a place called vitanet on the internet.I have found them to be the most effective.
My 8yo daughter just started 10mg of Adderall on Weds. We tried natural supplements for a while first- helped with calming her down, but not at all with focusing which is really where she needs the help.
Anywho, the past two nights she's had a REALLY hard time falling asleep. Goes to bed at 8 and luck if she falls asleep before 10. Then she's been up around 2 and up the rest of the night. It's now 6am and the girl has been up since 2! She's in a very good mood- thankfully lol, but I worry about school later today.
Is this a permanent side effect or is there a med that would be better? If this is permanent, this is NOT going to work. She was rummaging around in her closet at 3am and woke her 8month old brother with all the noise in there lol. I know she can't help it and I feel so bad for her!
I found the problem more on Adderall capsules but not so much on the pills. I can't sleep very well on Adderall and I feel kinda "buzzy" if I try; but, if I take too much or the wrong dose, then it makes me drowsy. You may have the same problem on other meds, you may not. It really depends. I don't know how active your daughter is, but my mom would have me run around in the afternoon for 20 minutes in the afternoon and that would usually help battle the Adderall buzzy-awake and drowsy effects. There can be an adjustment period to a new medication. This can last a couple of weeks. Or, it's possible the side effect will be more long term. Time is the only way to know.
While my child was adjusting to a medicine, the dr. recommended that we use melatonin (didn't help him. Problem was waking up once already asleep). He then told us to use Benadryl for a week while his body adjusted. That solved our problem, and he slept fine once we discontinued the Benadryl.
If you're going to add anything, try to wait until Fri. night to try it, just in case your child gets really drowsy. Better to do it when there's no school the next day!
I hope you're all getting good sleep soon!!!
I am on 10mg generic adderall twice a day and I have noticed that I have a harder time getting up in the morning. I have been an early morning insomniac for years as well as waking up during the night often. I now sleep at least 6 hours straight. I am so grateful that it's helping me with my sleep problems. And I don't know if it's hormonal, but I, too, have been quite weepy lately. I was on birth control for almost a year to help with hormones and while it didn't help much, i think it helped more than i gave it credit for. granted, your daughter probably is too young for that but maybe she's beginning puberty?
