If you go to a psychiatrist, you can get a prescriptionJessica N40017.908587963 Yeah, but how impersonal is that?  I want my doctor and therapist to know me in order to treat me - not just throw a pill in my face.  After all, the psych/doctor is in the profession of "helping" people and in order to do that, they have to get to "know" people.

I've done the psychiatrist thing and it's just very cold and methodical.  If I had a child with ADHD, I would want the professional to learn something about my child.  After all, how can you treat something/someone who you see for 5 minutes a month?
kjl269139918.8794907407lost-it, There are some possibilities here.  Your son could be immature for his age and that's why he behaves the way he does.  He could be too mature for kindergarten and is bored.  One thing you may want to consider at some point is an IQ test.  I believe that often times kids have a higher IQ than we give them credit for and hence they act out because their bored.

Just because your friend had a negative experience, it doesn't mean you will (unless you go to the same doctor, then there's a stronger possibility). 

There isn't really any "test" for ADHD.  It's more of a conversation of the history of the person and a collection of the symptoms which bring a professional to make a diagnosis.  Of course, it's always a good idea to have any physical conditions ruled out to aid in the diagnosis.  And to make sure that the individual is physically healthy to tolerate medicine, a doctor consultation is a good idea.

If you're worried that your concerns will fall on deaf (or quackery) ears, you can always shop around for a doctor that WILL listen to you.  Good doctors are out there.  It's up to us to find them and weed out the bad ones. :)

can your doctor prescribe your child adderall xr without a phyc. eval.? i really think my son has ADHD but im not going to let him go through all the phcy. eval. because i went through it when i was his age {he's 6} and it was very upsetting to me at that age. Also a friend of mine's son went through all the testing and it took 3 months and the phyc ended up blaming his parents for their sons behaviors and told them to spank him more! well in the end he was still put on adderall by the doctor but i was wondering if i could skip all the headache and get him started because he is failing kendagarden and we have only about 4 weeks to get him to stop wondering around the classroom,or playing with his hands and figgiting with his feet because if you stand over him he does his work better than the rest of the students but right now he cant focus and do the work.ive-lost-it39918.7649884259The treating is done by psychologists and the meds are usually done by a psychiatrist. they give us no time 15 min to see how things are going. We go to the therapist to talk and get therapy. I also got a good solid evaluation that the psychiatrist got a copy of and knows of all my sons issues.ive-lost-it wanted to know how to get meds without getting a psyche eval. My dd was diagnosed in first grade by her primary care physician. I just made a regular appointment with him. He gave me ADHD rating scales for us and her teachers. We made another appointmnet to review the scales and then he gave her a prescription for Adderall.
