Where do I start? | ADHD Information

Hi. I hope this is the right forum.  I think my son could be exhibiting a lot of symptoms of ADHD that are contributing to a host of other behavior problems.  He'll be 7 in June.  After he was suspended for throwing fits at school last week, I got desperate and asked the school counselor for suggestions as to what steps to take.  She sent home the name of a Psychologist  & we have had one visit & another one is scheduled for next week.

After doing some research, I feel like he needs to be evaluated and tested for ADHD, & possibly ODD & SID.  What steps should I take to start this.  Someone suggested a NuerosPSHYCOLOGIST.  As they are the ones trained in giving the tests and evals.  Is this correct?  What can I expect as far as evals & tests?  Is there someone else I need to see.  The pshycologist that we went to is an Art Therapist- trained in helping kids express themselves with drawings.  Should I drop him to see an nueropsychologist or give it longer with him.

The earlier you ascertain the reason your child is having such struggles, the sooner you can get him the treatment and interventions that will restore his quality of life. Your moving in the right direction as either a neuro/psych or a child psychiatrist would be the preferred specialists to evaluate your child in order to get a definitive diagnosis. There could be a number of reasons that your child is exhibiting such behaviors including a medical reason so I suggest that you first have your child's pediatrician do a full medical workup. Once you rule out a medical reason have your child evaluated by a specialist as mentioned above. Welcome to the board Make the appointment NOW!! He should be evaluated by a pediatric neuropsycho. He may needs meds according to the diagnosis. Then we see if we need to get him a 504/IEP to help him.
