Folican & Abilify PLEASE COMMENT!!! | ADHD Information

You need to get your pdoc to first clarify your son's diagnosis, and then second to pull his/her head out of his/her a**.  Sorry, but I'm just calling it like I see it.

Focalin is a stimulant for ADHD.  Abilify and Risperdal are atypical antipsychotics prescribed for bipolar and schizophrenia.  Kids with ADHD will generally not respond well to atypical antipsychotics unless there is a comorbid mood disorder, and kids with bipolar and other mood disorders often respond very, very badly to stimulants even if they do have comorbid ADHD.  You may need a neuropsych expert to work this all out.

Also, unrelated to the above, it sounds like your son is having refractory responses to atypical antipsychotics, which is a rare but not unheard of side-effect.  For example, my bipolar daughter stayed wide awake and hyper on Risperdal, Seroquel and Zyprexa.... all medications that are supposed to make you sleepy and calm.  Ironically, Abilify is the only one she can take successfully, and it has worked well for her for several years now.

Sorry if I'm making things sound more complicated.  But I went through similar issues before my daughter's sucessful diagnosis and treatment.... and I want to make sure no on else suffers like we did if they don't have to.

Ya I agree they need to get there heads out of there butts and stop treating him like a Ginnie pig! I know they have to do that sometimes but in my case I believe they have no idea what to do with him! Ok it made his night a living nightmare!!!! He and us would be lucky if we got a few hours of sleep. He was up every hour!!!!! Ok I need as much advice and story's as I can get!! My son is almost 7 and he has ADHD, ODD, and lead paint poisoning. He is a handful. He is on Folican 20mg at 8am, 15mg 12pm and 15mg 4:30pm. He was on Risperdal .25mg in the evening. If they upped it he would go nuts. Breaking windows, cussing, throwing things, yelling ect. In the morning before meds and in the evening after meds he is the same way. He was on Folican XR it was only lasting for a very short time as long as the non XR - so they put him on the regular. Today they put him on to Abilify 2mg at night and after a week maybe in the morning too. I see lots of people looking but not responding - Please write anything that can relate! I want to kinda see if this is a "honeymoon" stage or is this something that will help him in the long run. Scared me away. Have you tried Melatonin for sleep? it is an over the counter sleep aid and my son 11, has taken 5mg for the last 3 years. it is the only thing that would put him to sleep at night and keep him there till 6am.
