Neuropsych | ADHD Information

I would definatly go to see the neurophych. They know alot more about ADHD and it's co-exsistings. They will be better to help you thouroghly diagnose him and get the right med on board, then go back to the psychiatrist for refils.

Our doctor would have us call and make weekly appointments, etc, not just leave us hanging for 3 months at a time. I remember trying one dose, too low, so I would call, p/u the prescription and change the dose over night, all with the doctor assisting us.

I am not liking the doctor.

YOu need to find a qualified doctor who wants to help your son. This isn't helping your son!!

Is your son different off the meds or is this while he has it in his system? What med??

A psychiatrist, while highly qualified will ask a host of questions but a neruo will do a full neurological exam and will also probably conduct an eeg test. An electroencephalogram (EEG) is a test that measures and records the electrical activity of your brain by using sensors (electrodes) attached to your head and connected by wires to a computer. The neuro/psych will rule out other disorders based on his testing and Imo this is certainly worth the drive.josh has had an eeg, but he could'nt go to sleep for, he's never been able to sleep once he's awake. but it was normal as was his brain mri. i've never been happy with a psychiatrist, but there are none here for kids, we'd go, i'd tell what josh was doing and here's a new med. come back in 3 mths, repeat. never trying to explain why the meds don't, just here's a new med. come back in 3 mths. it seemed like the mood stabilizer medications set off an imbalance in josh, after he tried those meds. he is a different boy, i don't know who this boy is.what does a neuropsych do different than a psychiatrist? I thinking of taking josh to a neuro but the only one is 2-3 hrs from me, so i was wondering what they accomplish and is it beneficial to see one. so far nothing else is working. We saw a ped. neuropsych. They specialize in children with these "things" , just like a pediatrician and a general practioner.but is it worthwhile to see one-is it worth driving 3 hours each way. and will i get some answers is what i'm wondering.

Can you talk on the phone w/ the neuropsych or one of the assistants and find out what their eval. entails?  Then, contrast that w/ what a psychiatrist tells you that they'll do.

For me, taking my child to the neuropsych. was by far the best option.  The psychiatrist was going to meet w/ child and family for 45 minutes and then make a determination whether he has ADHD.  The neuropsych. spent an entire day talking w/ parents and child, performing a variety of tests and observing his behavior during them as well as of course seeing how he did on those tests, and then we got a detailed report a few weeks later w/ in-depth recommendations of what parents and teachers can do to help him function better.  Most of those recommendations weren't needed once he started medicine, but some have been helpful (like suggestions to prevent being too fidgity, preferential seating so he's sitting in area of room w/ fewer distractions, teacher keep extra eye whether he seems focused, etc.).  I also felt reassured that the neuropsych. ruled out whether there were any learning disabilities contributing to what we were seeing.
