Insurance frustrations | ADHD Information
Have you tried an appeal so they will cover the ADHD meds for you? That's outrageous that they don't. I guess they still live under that rock where people believe that you outgrow ADHD and it's just a children's disorder.
You also might want to talk w/ your HR department. Maybe there's a way to change this when they are renegotiating the terms w/ the insurance co.? I have no idea if they can do that or not.
I agree with mom's advice. first check with the Insurance Co. rep. If they say the policy package offered by your employer is limiting because of your employer's choice, then you know where to go next. that is, if you choose to discuss this with your employer!! I appreciate your support. I don't know if my insurance company can or will do anything. And to bring my problem to HR is not a good idea. Because I can deal with insurance company without them telling HR anything, I'd rather deal with them. I'd rather suffer in silence than to tell HR. I don't trust my HR director to not stab me in the back and she's fake. Nice, but fake. I don't want insincere sincereties. And I certainly don't want my company knowing that I have ADHD. It would just not be good. I may dig a little deeper about the policy and see. An appeal may be an option. Yes, they still live under a rock. Thanks.
Does anyone else have this same issue? I have insurance through my employer but the policy does not cover medications for ADHD for individuals over the age of 18. Therefore, ALL cost is out of pocket for me. Which, as you can imagine, can be quite expensive. I've tried (all generics of course) Ritalin SR, Adderall, and now I have a script for Dexedrine. I live in Oregon and they have a prescription drug program to aid people in getting medications. It helped with the Dexedrine. It was only . I thought I might try to get prescription assistance through the pharmaceutical companies but I was told by my specialist (her assistant left me a message) that because I have insurance, I would not qualify but I don't have insurance for THESE medications so wouldn't that be exclusive? It's all very confusing. I don't know if the Dexedrine will help but if it doesn't then it's on to the next expensive drug (which I haven't researched yet). I'm hoping that something helps other than the expensive ones. Adderall XR is 0 a month so those of you who get it covered, please be ever so grateful. I am grateful that I finally have professionals willing to hear me (instead of diagnosing me with depression and giving me anti-depressants which don't work) and to treat me within my limitations. I'm just frustrated that I can't get what I need.
I just find it terribly frustrating that the insurance company's seem to think that people just quit being ADHD when they turn 18 or something. Or that they simply just don't need help anymore. Or that they can find some other alternative. I considered dropping my insurance all together so I could qualify but it was pointed out to me that if I do that, I may be left high and dry because "you're offered insurance and if you decline, that excludes you from other forms of assistance." It's almost like you're better off being on public assistance because then you don't have money, insurance or anything and then you qualify for these programs. RGH!
So, if anyone out there has any similar experiences, I'd be most appreciative to hear from you. I feel very alone even though I have a ton of support from my sister. I just don't know how/what to say to plea my case to the insurance company if need be or if it'd even be worth it. Or if I should try to get prescription assistance through the drug company or what alternatives I have.
Help???
