Best career choices for ADD | ADHD Information
I was laid off several months ago, not due to performance, but was one of huddreds laid off that week. Now that I have a chance to "start clean" was wondering if anyone had general advice on what careers or career-types might be best suited to adult ADD? I have tried to stay away from jobs that require a high degree of organization and limited paperwork, but then I think with Adderall maybe I can handle these tasks now. However, I don't want to take a job such as that and then find myself hating it and unable to keep up with the demands.
I used to try to get jobs that offered the most freedom and flexibility and boses that had a hands-off approach, but I found that was not a productive way for me to work as I often got off track without firm deadlines and a structured environment. But then I feel if I look for jobs that are very structured and controlling I will hate that too! Help! Any suggestions will be much appreciated! What jobs have people had that they felt best or least suited for?
Well, I can certainly relate. The business of finding your own niche in the work world is often compounded by the disability. I was wondering what the job you lost was. You didn't mention anything negative about it, so I'm assuming it was okay for you. Could you look for another in the same field? I often hear too that many ADDers are not "team players", and do better on their own. That has definitely been my dd's experience. A company that let her go actually gave her that feedback.
Anyway, you wrote a long time ago, so let us know where you're probably working now.

Hi - Thanks for the message. The job I was laid off from was a Business Analyst and I did like it, but worked for a bank and the economy forced them to let go 1/3 of the company. I have since started another job as a Business Systems Analyst and am doing very well. It is at a work environment far superior, I believe, to banking with all their bureaucracy and layers of management (or mismanagement) and entrenched politics.
After much self analysis, I felt I needed a job that has clear deadlines, offers variety, opportunities to learn, a sense of urgency (which helps me focus) and one where I will get encouragement or positive feedback when done well. The job I found seems to have some of all of those. As far as working in a team...though I don't feel I make the best manager, I am a good team player. I enjoy talking with others, bouncing ideas off, and assisting where I can. But due to my focus issues (and I'm on meds) I still am more productive working alone.
