medication withdrawal | ADHD Information
Does anyone experience withdrawal symptoms every time you take a "break" from your meds? I can't help but wonder if I'm just super sensitive or what. I know I need medication to help my ADHD but isn't it only addicts (people who don't really need meds) who experience withdrawal? I don't understand. Any thoughts?
kjl, I take my meds 7 days a week too... (w/occasional breaks). As for the sleep issues you are having...are you getting any exercise? If not, I suggest you try working it into your daily routine and see what happens. It's especially important for thems of us with ADD (with or without the H).
John - I exercise when I can. I've had sleep problems for years. Only now that I'm taking medication am I sleeping any better. Interesting. Without going into a lot of details, I'm usually pretty good about exercising - two or three times a week. Of course, now that my sleeping has been altered, getting up at 430 in the morning to go workout is not happening. :)
My therapist suggested that I try taking a break on the weekend and if I feel tired/withdrawal, to just take a pill. Maybe this weekend. I don't know. Had a big blow today from the insurance co. Feel like just saying "f" it all.
Thanks for writing.
Sometimes I'll just reduce the amount of meds I take rather than cut 'em out completely for a weekend or whatever. I find doing it taht way avoids any "withdrawal" sensations and still gives me a little change from the "normal" med routine.
When I first started, I could stop for a day or a week or a month and experience no withdrawal symptoms. These days though, if I take a break, I'm feeling sleepy, I'm very hungry--which I assume are considered "withdrawal" symptoms.
John D40002.2128009259I am now wondering if my medication is even helping anymore. I notice no side effects except for better sleeping. Weird. I find it interesting that I'm not reacting to these medications. Must mean I'm tolerant or that I truly do need them. After all, if I didn't need them, I would just be getting a "high", right? I'm just very frustrated because they aren't helping today.
it lasts for 1-2 days.Jessica N40017.9045949074kjl -- are you sleeping better during the time the meds are supposed to be having their beneficial effect, or do you sleep better after the meds are wearing off (or have worn off)? If the former, then it sounds like your medication isn't working well for you; if the latter, then that sounds like normal rebound.
John - It's my night time sleep that's improved. So maybe that's normal rebound. However, I only got <6 hours of sleep last night. But I didn't wake up during that sleep. I'm tired this morning. Sometimes I do get a bit drowsy or lethargic during the "beneficial time". I'm taking Dexedrine. I know an XR would be better but they're too expensive. I am also choosing to take medication even on the weekends. No breaks for me. Thanks.
