If his doctoriprescribed 20 mg twice a day and your son is taking the Adderall as prescribed,  he's not abusing, he's following the doc's recommendation.  40 mg.day is not the maximum daily amount--but there's no telling from here whether or not the doc has over-prescibed.  Best for you to discuss this with your son, if that's possible, and his doctor (with or without your son).   It's possible a different dose, or a different drug will work better--that's something to work on with the doctor. what are the signs of adderall abuse?  My adult son who is also bipolar  takes 20 mg twice a day, once in the morning and once in the afternoon.  He is losing weight and is very manic after taking the second pill.  Do you think the doctor has over prescribed?
