Hi I am relatively new here. My brief history is I have a 8 yo son who we have been struggling to get a correct diagnosis on for over a year.
Currently he is diagnosed with ADHD,anxiety and sensory integration disorder. We tried multiple stimulants and nothing seemed to help. That is when they diagnosed the anxiety and SID. He was started on lexapro which helped the anxiety.
We are now are going to a new neuro psychologist for re-testing and she recommended tenex. I spoke with his psychatrist who felt like that might help. He prescribed tenex 0.5mg at bedtime x 1 week and now we are up to o.5mg am and 0.5mg pm.
When do you do the pm dose? my ped said to take it at bedtime but pysch instructions made it seem like evening time. psych is out on medical leave. We have a new psych but can't see them until August.
I really think the tenex is helping. He is less impulsive. I am hoping that alone will help with focus.
Thanks for your thoughts.
Michele
We started Tenex a month ago and are still playing with dosing times and amounts. I just bumped his bedtime dose to afternoon today.... we'll see how he sleeps.... and more importantly, how crazy he feels when he wakes up.I was at my child's dr. yesterday. He said that some people take Tenex 3x per day. My child currently takes 1 mg in the morning and 1.5 mg in the afternoon, and we might be adding .5 mg in the evening at bedtime. Like you, my child is really difficult in the mornings until the stimulant kicks in.
Also know that a 24-hour version of Tenex is coming out in October. It's called Intuniv. The dr. confirmed again yesterday that it's slated for October 2009 release.
My child gets the PM dose of tenex in the late afternoon. That way, the Tenex reduces the impulsivity and hyperactivity we see when the stimulant wears off.
For my child, his anxiety gets worse when the stimulant wears off (he has GAD). He needs the tenex also to reduce his anxiety. He also takes Zoloft, but he needs a very low dose or his impulsivity skyrockets. He takes only 12.5 mg of Zoloft (that's 1/2 of the pill w/ the lowest dose they make).
