HELP,NEW TO THIS.. | ADHD Information
Look into behavioral modifications you can do at home and see if they
work. The marble technique (goal based discipline) works great with kids
with ADHD. Try to give very clear directions including every step. Keep a
routine, including a bedtime routine. Make sure your child eats enough
and gets enough rest. And give him warnings when transitions are
coming. I negotiate times with my son before he's allowed to do
something, then remind him again and again when it's time to do
something else, like get ready for bed. He grumbles, but he's compliant
now. You've just got to stick to the plan and eventually he'll get used to
the routine of it. And pick your battles. Even if you got medication for
your child it's not like flipping a switch and the kid's suddenly an angel.
Work on one behavior you want to change at a time, starting with the
most important one. Once that's working go to the next. But keep
reminding him about your expectations concerning behaviors he has
mastered so he doesn't forget them. Don't do time outs - they don't
work. Instead give your son a goal he can work toward.
My son has a pretty strong case of ADHD and he went 2.5 years before he
was medicated simply by doing those sorts of things - they worked as
well as medication - until they stopped working anymore, that is.
Good luck!I agree with Corrina about the behavior modification techniques. They work very well in a lot of cases no matter what the "diagnosis" is and I highly recommend them for everyone who has kids. Unfortunately there are those kids that just need medication- in addition to the behavior techniques (like mine!) If the techniques don't work or if more is needed then the proper diagnosis is a must! Is there a specialist you can go to?Hi, i'm on here to try and get as much information as i can on this subject as i think my son may have Adhd or O.d.d. he is seven and a half and every day is a constant battle, i dread him coming home from school now it's that bad, i know that sounds awful. we have been under the child mental health service for a number of months but now they've 'signed' us off as my son didnt get a diagnosis. his scores for hyperactivity and adhd score test (i dont know what it's called) was high from home but the one they sent into school had very low scores. this was a few months ago and i'm now thinking that he's been missed somehow and that they've not diagnosed him when they should have done. can this happen ? any help, advice very gratefully recieved. ThanksThank you for my replies, i shall have a search for that because i've never heard of it ! thanks again.
