Book recommendations

Hi all,

I raised my ADHD son, and am now raising my ADHD gs.  Things have changed a bit, and while I've kept utd a little bit, I haven't been really following the current trends.

Can someone recommend some good books or links on toddlers with ADHD - especially on discipline?  Time outs are a big waste of time.  Try to get them to sit still!!!  And if you finally do, they just sit and play with the chair they are sitting on.  It just is totally ineffective for at least my kids (ds and gs).

I need some new, fresh ideas - I know the structure and consistency, he's too young for MARBLE, so what about the early developmental years?  (3-5)?  Can anyone recommend something?  Books or links

1-2-3 Magic?  It is a good discipline method that was recommened when my DS was younger but I don't know if 3 is too young.

Good luck!

1-2-3 Magic is a good book to use.  It doesn't always work but sometimes it does and even when my son is in one of his worst ADHD fits sometimes he still responds to the counting.

I just started reading "From Chaos to Calm" by Heininger.  The cover says "Effective Parenting of Challenging Children with ADHD and other Behavioral Problems"  It seems to be good so far...

Also, I find that a reward system works well. In the Parenta of Children with ADHD section here there is a strand about the "marble system".  It works pretty well.

Good luck!

I have a 3 year old and a 6 year old with ADHD.  The marble system works for both of them pretty well.  They love to earn marbles and the threat of losing a marble can stop them in their tracks sometimes.

It is funny because I have more problems with the 3 year old with behavior.  Time outs work okay, but I will send him to his room many times.  This gives him a break and he can lie on his bed and I get a break from him.

When my older son was 3, time outs did not work for him.  It was more work just to make him sit.  Again, I started sending him to his room and it gave me a little relaxation.

Now for the older one, time outs can actually work.  I usually just make him sit on a stop to get him calmed down and easier to handle.

Good luck with finding what works for you and your grandson.
