I also posted a repy to "singlemomofone" tonight that you might find interesting. In addition to that I would say that if your son's symptoms are caused by ADHD then he needs medication. There are lots of other behavioral things and supplements that will help but if he's anything like my son NONE of that really helps if he's not medicated.
I'm sorry that you have to wait so long for help. I know how awful it can be! Hang in there!
As for the sleep issue- My son takes Melatonin and it makes him really drowsy before bed and he goes to sleep much better. Here in the US it's an over-the-counter supplement. I'm not sure if it's the same there. My son takes 1.5mg before bed and it does the trick! They also have sustained release Melatonin to help stay alseep once he actually gets there.
Good luck!
Hi! You may want to read posts by Singlemomofone - she has a 5 year old and also lives in the UK and is having trouble getting her DD help. Maybe you two could connect via email or something and support each other in this journey. Also, you may find things in the responses she has gotten helpful.
Meanwhile I am really sorry you are having such difficulties and that it is so difficult getting help. I remember when my DS was 5 and how difficult it was until we got meds. Even with meds he couldn't sleep in the same room with his brother because he would pester his little brother and keep him awake. It is better now that he is older. Is there anyway you can put one of them in a different room? Even sleeping in the floor of another room in the house? Also, you might want to check the Alternatives thread. Since you have to wait 5 months to get a dx/meds maybe something in alternative medicine would help, even if it was just a little it might tone things down a bit.
Hopefully someone can offer some suggestions until you can get your DS a definite diagnosis and the appropriate medication. Once that happens it will get easier.
Hang in there!
my youngest son is 6 years old& has all the signs of adhd& odd, although he,s been seen by drs,who at first told me he doesn,t have adhd,as he behaved quietly at the appointment, which i,ve read that some children with adhd do,so,before his next appointment,i made a list of all aspects of his behaviour& attitude& the dr then agreed with me,that he could have adhd& that she would refer him for assessment.he,s had that appointment, where i gave this other dr a questionnaire i had to fill him about him.after the appointment, the dr told me he does have a problem, but,i wasn,t told that he does have adhd& odd&that the waiting list or treatment is about 4/5 months,by which time he,ll be 7.i,m a single mum of 3,although my daughter has left home& i,m really struggling to cope with my son,s behaviour,he is constantly on the go,defies& back answers me on whatever i say or ask him to do,deliberately annoys his big brother or tries to hurt him, also, the 6 year old will hurt himself on purpose,by either running into doors with hs head, dropping himself to the floor, banging his head or biting himself so hard he leaves bruises on himself, also,he,ll try to hurt himself to try& get his brother in trouble, recently,he made himself fall downstairs& he told me his brother had pushed him down the stairs, which didn,t happen,as i watched him making himself roll down the stairs, while yelling that his brother had pushed him.my other son does hit his brother from time to time, but, that,s only when he,s too wound up by my 6 year old.the other week, the 6 year old kicked over the dining chair his brother was sat on,as they were eating their dinner, making him fall& hurt his neck, luckily, not seriously.my 6 year old is taking 2 hours to go to sleep, just lately,as he won,t stay in bed,so,i,ve had to resort to getting medicine from the dr to help him sleep,as i can,t cope with keep getting up to tell him to stay in bed, plus,he keeps his brother awake,as for now, they share a room.i,d appreciate support from other parents who are experiencing the same problems as me.thankyou. thankyou for replying back, logan,s mom& for wishing me luck for my son,s appointment tomorrow,i,ll post a note saying how we got on.i,ve not given him the phenergan tonight,as it,s making him more hyperactive when he goes to bed.before i started giving him the phenergan,he,d be asleep before 10.30pm,but,once he stated taking it,he,d still be awake at nearly midnight, repeatedly getting out of bed.hes in bed now& still awake, getting out of bed, but,i,m hoping he,ll go to sleep earlier tonight, without the medicine.
