Melatonin Dose for children | ADHD Information

Hello,

My 6 yr old has recently had her Concerta increased from 27 mg to 36 mg. It was needed to help her focus better, and that has improved. The MD recommended melatonin if sleep becomes an issue, which it has. Only thing was, I forgot to ask about a dose. Any recommendations?

Start and 1 mg and work your way up to 6 mg, stopping at the lowest dose that works. One brand may work better than another. Also, there's a time-release version.Jessica N40023.9114583333My son is only 4 so his dose will probably be a lot less than what you need but usually .75mg works for him (we quarter a 3mg chewable pill) but sometimes I increase it to 1.5mg and I haven't had to go higher. My younger DS (age 7) takes 5mg of melatonin. Sometimes he
can get by with 2.5mg but NEVER lower than that.

My older DS (age 10) WAS taking 12mg of melatonin and it
wasn't doing ANYTHING for him. I guess over the years that
he's taken melatonin (age 4) his body has just gotten used
to it and it's no longer effective for him.

Thanks - 3 mg last night did the trick. Thank goodness, she was starting to get cranky!

I think a lot of it was she had tracked back into school and started a new grade. She did this last year when school started, and was not on any ADHD meds then.

As a matter of fact, I had been having trouble getting to sleep the last few nights. Too much stuff going on at work, so I tried 6 mg and slept great.
