7 year old son & meds | ADHD Information
I'm not an expert but I know that sometimes a kid's body will adjust to a medication very quickly. That may be what's happening. It could be that the dose just needs to be increased again (and again) until the body stablizes. Or if the dose becomes too high (the doctor should know what is too high) then it's time to switch to another type of medication. My son metabolized Adderal very quickly and his body adjusted very quickly but he tolerates Ritalin much better. Good luck!
You stay on it until you hit the theraputic dosage for his weight. [QUOTE=Jessica N] You stay on it until you hit the

ditto that. hello....new to the message board but i have read some great stuff.
wondering about meds: 7 yr old son on Focalin XR 10mg for a week...worked first day really well and then began to taper off to the point that he seemed completely uneffected and was eating and sleeping completely normally...so, doc added 5mg, which did the exact same thing....worked for about a day and then began to taper. it's been 2.5 weeks and i have quit giving him the medication since it really doesn't seem to help and does give him a stomach ache and diarrhea on occasion. question is do we stay on this med, just continuing to increase the dose or should i push to change to something different? this is all so new and he went on straterra first but that didn't work either.
any opinions appreciated...thanks in advance...

Just clarifying a couple of comments. Stimulants are not prescribed based on weight. It depends how the individual responds to it to determine optimal dosage.oh, and i mistyped the dosage...it is 30mg....yes, great results so far. No terrible side effects aside from totally not eating during the day. not sure how much weight Hudson has lost-i am estimating around 3 or 4 lbs so far-but he is famished in the morning and at dinner so i pretty much let him eat as much as he wants. just trying to get him to drink water during the day....
we have had a couple of "bad" days on the Vyvanse but i guess that will happen? I really just want this medication to work for him in school and that started yesterday and he did well.
oh, and i do give him a teensy bit of melatonin before bedtime to help relax. ok, that's it for now. i will definitely post if anything else comes up.
good luck!

My son was on XR for years and they kept doing the up and up and they finally said no more and put him on short acting folican. He did great! He had to take it 3 times a day. He did really good for a year and now there changing it again because he got depressed on it. So try to ask the normal Folican. I think you will like it

hey thanks....we actually started him on Vyvanse 20mg and it seems to be working great. the doc said he was hypermetabolizing the Focalin and that he would probably continue to do so. Guess we will stick with this until something changes.
thanks again for the reply!
