I believe he needs an increase of meds. I am sure the doctor started him off at the very lowest mg. You need to increase the dose until you find HIS most successful dose. We did this and it took a while, but boy what a difference.
Call the doctor ASAP and tell him/her what you told us.
The other twist to this is, adderall may not be the best for your son. We tried it and it didn't like my son, so we switched to concerta and that worked the best.
It is a trial and error "thing" unfortunately. what works for one may not work for someone else. AND the doseage is very important.
Please post us how you all are doing!!
One more thing to add to my post, our doctor added guanfacine/tenex (same thing) to his daily meds. He has been taking them both since he was just shy of 7. He is now 12 and still on the same combo just a higher dose of concerta.
My son is NOT violent but very HHHHH and impulsive. This helps to calm him down.
When he was in second grade and we were still ramping up his concerta doseage, we increased the concerta but not the guanfacine. The teacher saw no change for the better. So the next day we upped the guanfacine and boy what a difference she said. He is only taking 1 mg of it but you can split it in half. He started on half and was increased to 1 mg. He is still on just 1 mg along with his concerta.
I just wanted to add that. It may help your son as well, just a thought!
my 5 year old son was resently diagnosed with impulsive adha and was put on 5mg of adderall . I find that the meds are not working for his that well. he still continues to jump arround scream at the top of his lungs and pretty much climb the walls. I have stoped him from having anything with sugar in it. what should i do? The only thing i find the adderall does is make him extreamly moody..I need help to find away to calm him down before he ends up hurting his baby sister or another child because he can be extreamly violent too.
Is he acting the same as he did before he started the Adderall except more moody now? If that's the case then either the dose needs to be adjusted or Adderall is not the medicine for him. My son started on Adderall and it made him very moody and he had horrible "rebound" when it wore off. When the doc adjusted the dose and timing it got better but not good enough. So we ended up going with Ritalin and he's doing great now.
It sometimes takes a while to get the medicine right. There can be a lot of adjustments that have to be made-types, doses, timing of doses, mixing of medications etc. We had a hard time finding the right "cocktail" for my son. It took about 5-6 months. But it's made a WONDERFUL difference in his life since we've gotten it right!
Who prescribes the Adderall for him? You should consult him/her about the issues he's having. I recommend seeing a specialist (ie psychiatrist or neuropharacologist) that has experience with ADHD. They know best how to adjust the medication to make it work. They've usually had more experience than a pediatrician.
Hope this helps a little, Good luck!
he has been acting the same since befroe he started only more moody
I know what that's like...you're thinking "Oh great, we not only have all the original annoying symptoms but NOW we have the added bonus of a moody child!"
The last thing ADHD kids need is another symptom! If the medicine is working correctly the moodiness shouldn't be there and his other symptoms should be better. If this isn't happening then consult the doc as soon as you can.
I wish you the best!
