Culling Old Papers

I keep too much stuff, for too long.  I am in the process of moving my stuff, Once I am finished moving, then I can do some work on making the boxes more organized,

Need to create some boxes Labeled, "condensed Files?

Need to move a Pod to a new storage lot.

I think of it kind like being a tinker fairy.

To some ADDers it's our talent.

My latest trick is to keep clutter out of common areas.

my clutter rule #17 clutter is not to be abandoned in any of these places.

bathroom, yard, porch ,living room , dining room , on the boat,  or anywhere that a friend might see it.

which is supported by rule #12 the first or last day the seasons ž spring, summer, autum, fall.  all cutter must be gathered and put away.

no matter how many rules i make  i wind up in a cluster %V(^ sooner or later when i then have to use rule 2

if rule 1 occurs  get someone other than myself to remedy the situation.

I'm sorry if this isnt any help.

I cant sleep  my minds racing  and  ...

navigating and achieving goals   usually requires assistance.

my question is

Is anyone helping you?

There are some people avaialbe to help, but I have not constructed the optimal framework for motivational asssistance form those available.  There are professional organizers avaialable to help.

I have a clutter catch up box labled  "Desk Papers, certain Dates".

man .

I know what my clutter symptoms are and what causes them, but I just cant seem to execute them.

somethings i do

  1. i keep some areas where clutter is forbidden.  mostly where friends and neighbors  cant get to it.
  2. i head off mess . by not mixing it all together. papers just put into bins , coupons into a coupon drawer, instructions and manuels in have started looking up on-line then tossing out . then seperatly keeping junk seperate from unsed decorations. toys in toy areas the can be easily put intubs or chests.
  3. i started to realize that if i pick something up  it must go to its final destination  otherwise im just perpetually stacking and restackin over and over  and not really using things  -   which has the pprotunity get more things stacked there or become mixed up - fall over and just be a mess again. taking even more time .
  4. i had to see differences that lazy things happen  , but that incoomplete things happen too . once i started going by a list of what needs completed  itt helped a little bit.  when i see hat im being lazy  i seek help.  even this site from time to time offers a chance for myself to post a deadline.  like your orig  post  . i do it too  for peer support.  but online support isnt as effective as a friend or a hired helper .
  5. i  identify what i neglect or have abandoned.  usually it isnt a problem -but sometimes i start to feel overwhelmed and avoid doing angthing  . then more thngs need attention.   so again  i refer to a list to help prioritize.
  6. im a sucker for file cabinets . one whole wall in my garage is file cabinetts.i had to paint a line 2ft from them just to keep from stacking thing in front of the the drawers.  the file cabinetts made a big difference  in that the garage had space to suck up everthing.  so in the house i was able to keep papers in one file cabinet.  as to keep papers out of clutter .
  7. i started to scan  papers as i put them in the home file cabinet  i do this by naming them by year and relevance    ( ele bill may09.jpg )  or schoolwork 05 19 09.jpg   this was a pain at first , because i rarely  actually did he scaning , but once it started purging once every three months  its less a burden takes 2 hours  and is superfreaking easy to see all of it and put on cd andeven batch them in emial accounts for permant retrieval. but i continue to keep the originals in the garage i dont know why. i think ill start throwing things out that are 20 years old if they are valueless.  once that i figured out that pressing the " F2 " to rename files it all became very easy .     easy to  change, update, tag.
  8. i used to keep all my little personal notes that i keep in my pocket in a drawer  but i started scaning them too   now i access those notes so easily with the computer  either by name or scrolling through a slideshow. when i got a smart phone and was able to all my ideas for the ten years i felt blessed  that i didnt discard them .  if i had perfect recal  i wouldnt need to do this but  i cant remember a lot of stuff  .  or i cant recall it acturatly.   sometimes i feel likke reading my notes from the past  help me not to repeat certian cycles. so i can get on with my new ideas and trials.
  9. 7 years ago the clutter was a monster.  i had a baby on the way and i wanted the monster out of the house  but at least kept the clutter monster in  the garage. opps  it ate my tools. i had to learn to not just stack unsorted stacks in the garage. but i had to take unsorted clutter from the container sitting just outside the garage  and item by item put in the garage in a permanet place.  this eliminated  having to look for lost things by sorting. because sortig through boxes piles and drawers of things with out puting them away just makes a big mess. thanks to digital camera i can photo the garage and the things in it.   i also put a catchall for tools  as i still find tools ive long forgotten about or couldnt find .    its terrible to be fixing a major project and spend time and money on lost tools.
  10. once everythree months i go in the garage and make sure i walk throught it safely. i get a big tub and fill it stuff i can sell or take to a donation center.  i hate doing this  .  but it keeps the monster managable . i miss having a garge that i can work on projects and have buddies over to help  but confined to the garage the clutter monster is not in my families space and life.

I keep my papers in Apple boes.  I keep the Apple boxes in Pods, or Overseas shipping containters, mounted on cinder blocks.

I moved storage locations, so I had to buy some cinder blocks.

Tomorrow I am junking a 40 year old motor home, which Ihave let get run down.

I have a junk man coming with a tow truck, and I need to finhish getting my stuff out of the mtorr home.  Still have some tools stashed away in little corners, I need to remeber where tehyt are.

I probably need to get an early start tomorrow morning, to gbet everyting out of the motor-home.  I may just put my stuff in the driveway, and figure out where to actually put the stuff after the motor home is gone.  I could cancel or delay the tow truck picking up the motor home.

Maybe I will set everything out in the drive, then see how much time I have left, and see if I should delay the tow truck.

Maybe I will bring several box tops with my minivan, then put stuff in the box tops, take them to the storage container and see about getting things sorted out.

I am just not sure how much stuff I have stored in the Motor Home.  Guess I should get started early tomorrow, so I can delay the tow truck if I need more time.

Once I get rid of the motor home, I can finishe moving the cement blocks.  Then the Bags of Sand and Gravel for leveling.

Then I can start configuing the empty storage containter pod.

..

I had Tow trucks scheduled for Monday and Tuesady, but Monday's truck was too small, and Tuesday's tow truck did not show up at all, and never answered their cell phone.

So I have a tow truck schducled for Friday morning, and I have the map quest directions to the automobile grave yard that has agreed to accept my 29 foot motor home.

I spread my stuff from the motor home, out all over the driveway on Monday, and left a message to delay until 11 AM,  Met the truck, at 10 Am, anyway.  Tow Truck was too Small.  Then I put my stuff in boxes and took the boxes to my storage container, 12 miles away,  two trips, and the driveway was clear.

I have a more relaiable two truck for Friday.  Have two back-up salvage yards that agreed to l accept my motor home, in case one rejects me.

I have to catch up on my bills tonight, then I can start sorting papers soon.  I am planning to make an educational DVD, need to start collecting papers for that topic, since I am not too sharp on that subject.  I can throw out other papers, not relating to my new DVD.

I have to start using my hyper-focus mode to get some bills paid, or caught up.

I still have not completely moved ot form my wooded lot site for my motorhome and contaners.  I moved three Mini-Van loads of cement blocks and bags of gravel Tuesday.  I had a brief conversation with my friend, who had let me use the wooded lot to store my motor home and pods over the past 5 years, who gave me prmission to go there Tuesday.  So my asking seems to give him a feeling of authority, which seems to give him a boost.  It seems he might be having trouble with his wife, but he does not discuss that with me.  So I have just been making steps toward moving out, every week or so, since about June.

So my objective has been to keep my friend with the wooded lot entertained with my mis-steps in getting moved out.  For now I can say, well I thought I could move everything in two loads, but I moved three loads, with my rear bumper dragging the ground, just about, and I still have a load or two left to move.

I can call him with my schdule for nexgt week in a day or two.  I don't know if he checks the progress I made in moving out.

I still feel pressure to get everything out, ubt the value of the gravel and blocks left is maybe $50.00, and hardly even worth the trip to me.  I will just pray for my friend to be happy and patient with me.  The last few items cannot be a big deal to him, in reality.

My personality is to drag things out.  But I have bills and taxes, and papers to sort, so completing moving out is not a big benefit to me.  I will just try to work it in, best I can.  My fried has not really called me to ask me to move out quicker.  Just whenever I call, he sounds irritated that I have taken too long to move out.

If he starts calling me up, I can maybe worry more about it.

I am having trouble getting started to go over my bills.  So I just posted my concerns about finalizing moving out.  I will go over my schedule today, maybe give him a call, and let him complain or sometimes he just gives deep sighs of disappointment.   I just try to cheer him up with my little progress attempts and the humor of the mis-steps I have taken.

My personality is to drag things out.

Completing moving out is not a big benefit to me .

I am having trouble getting started

The last few items cannot be a big deal to him,

so I humor him with the mis-steps.

I have not moved contaners or from motorhome .

I still have a load or two left to move.

But need to go over my bills and taxes, and papers to sort out.

That how I  interpreted the above post

Otter, I too drag things out  sometimes for no reason. If i dont keep some of these types of drag outs - I call them "neglected things" on a check list  I could avoid completeing them for years.

It's a priority thing in my mind.

if something has no priority i can self talk myself past a deadline  .

so ive kept these "neglected things" on check lists.

now my phone makes my check lists. so my checklists are alway with me .

I pick a day once a week or a month and complete the top entry or the oldest.

this is key to my self esteem -

THE HABIT OF COMPLETING SOMETHING I'VE NEGLECTED.

it took me a lifetime to realize i do drag things out and neglect thing till i avoid them altogether.

now i cope with it by not letting it become  "out of sight out of mind". i keep them on my checklist of "NEGLECTED THINGS"  and  every saturday i start my day by  making the steps to complete it and i dont allow myself to do anything thing else till its finished or completed.

this introduces positive esteem  as reward  where there was only negative esteem  and disappointed friends and family.

so yea

its a bummer to give up prime saturday time to do  non-benificial or low priority things ,but  its wonderful to finally let go of what ive been dragging around.
