| 7yr old cries at the littlest things | |||

My 7yr old son who has been on Concerta for over a year still continues to cry at the littlest issues. I am new at this but just was wondering if anyone else has this problem. Example: He found a tiny little light bulb from a Xmas decoration. Was playing with it and it broke. Major tears and drama. How should I handle this? I told him it was no big deal I was going to throw it away anyway. Then he just cried about how he loved it. I'm not sure how to help him handle him emotions. Do you think he is just sensitive or is it the medication? My son doesn't like to lose anything or is bothered when things break, but doesn't cry. He is a saver. Tells me he is saving old toys for his children!! I would talk him through it, that is what I do. I am very sensitive myself and compassionate. My son is just like me and I am proud of him. I also mention that I will replace items when I can, and if it is the right thing to do for him. Bethann- Thanks so much for the reply. That is too cute that he is saving things for his children. That is a good idea about the med I will have to call the doc and ask if that is a possible side effect. Definitely check with the doc to see if it could be a side effect. When my son tried Adderall he got overly emotional about almost everything. It was a side effect of the medicine and we just couldn't shake it so we switched to Ritalin and it got much better but didn't go away totally. So the doc put him on Tenex along with his Ritalin and BINGO! we finally got it right! Good luck! The XR meds seem to have that same emotional effect on my son. We tried Concerta, Adderall and Focalin. He would just get emotional and irritable over the slightest things. He seems to do much better controlling his emotions on the short acting meds.I also wonder if tenex (guanfacine as I call it) would help, if still needed. Others have posted about the same thing, emotional, and that this helped. We have been using it for over 5 years now, IN ADDITION with my son's concerta. It helps calm my over HHHH and Impulsive son. It truly keeps him in check. Just more info My son did worse on the fast acting and better on the XR. Every child is different and even something as small as the difference between XR and fast acting can make all the difference! But with mine it still wasn't enough so we switched the medicine all together and later added Tenex and it calmed that right down. There were several times that I got frustrated with the meds and asked the doctor why we were still on a certain type if it wasn't working. She said she wanted to run through all the different options (doses, timing etc) with one med before switching to another because the one we pass up may actually be "the one" and we just didn't give it enough of a chance. One the other hand, if the side effects were too severe she's switch him right away. Good luck! Thank you all so much for your suggestions. He just started school last week. I think I'm going to wait a couple of weeks to take him to the doctor so I can get some feed back from his teachers. I'm so glad to find some place where parents are going through the same things we are.
