Clonidine for my 5yr old ADHD Son | ADHD Information

Share
I saw the pediatrician today who finally diagnosed my son with ADHD.
He has decided to start him CLONIDINE first to get his sleep pattern sorted out before starting Stimulant meds. Just wondering if anyone else has used this and if any one knows any info about it, etc.....
Thanks in advance

It helps with hyperactivity and maybe impulsiveness. Didn't help with focus. I thought it was a good choice at five, because the academics are not that demanding in kindergarten. It slows the heart rate.Clonidine was our gateway med for my now 10 yr old son.  It helped him with sleeping better.  He took it for a few months before taking Focalin.  Make sure his vitals are checked regularly.  Now that he takes 15 mg Focalin XR daily, the clonidine is a good way for him to settle down and prepare for bed.  We have not seen any side effects.  My son also has mild tics (he is a sniffler) and the clonidine can suppress tics.  My understanding is that it is a mild drug with few side effects but as always monitor blood pressure and weight. My daughter started clonidine in June.  She's 3 1/2, doesn't nap, and would take 2-3 hours to settle down and go to sleep at night.  It has dramatically improved her sleep!  Now, she goes to bed when we put her down and actually goes to sleep within 15-20 minutes at most.  it doesn't knock her out at all.  It's the only med working for her right now.thank you all for your reply! really appreciate it!
