Alternative High School

Does anyone have experience with alternative high school?  My son is going into the 11th grade. Due to his low grades, even with summer school, he will not graduate on time.

Michigan now has very stringent graduation requirements.  He has to retake classes he does not pass.  At this time, he's taken Algebra "3" times and still needs to retake it!   Also, the move to trimesters causes classes to be condensed and moving at a faster pace.  He can't keep up let alone stay organized!

His counselor is suggesting an alternative high school.  Any thoughts?

I do not have any experience with alternative high schools, although my informtion was that here children with discipline/behavior problems, attendance, grades, etc. would be sent to an alternative. Those children who try to pass and are good overall kids, I never thought were sent!

Is your son medicated? Does he have a IEP or 504 plan? Sounds like he should have one or the other and that the school should be helping him more than they are.

Any other issues except passing math? Organization is huge problem for adhd'ers and schools should help keep them on track.

We have a 504 plan due to qualifiying with ADHD diagnosis and organization is written into the plan!!

Please have the school evaluate him before they send him off. I don't know if an alternative school is best for YOUR son, at least the ones that we have.

Please keep us updated!!
