where do I go to get help? | ADHD Information

Share
My 8 year old has had problems in school for the last year. We have a Tss worker in the house for the summer. I am now not happy about him going back into school with no help. I am hoping it won't be long before I get him school hours. Does anyone have a IEP for there child? If so how do I go about asking for that? Also we just recently went to MH/Mr  for a diagnois. That was a joke. Where did everyone go to get a correct diagnois for there child? The pediatrican said to go see the psychartist, but that was no help. He did give him strattera 40mg to start. But my son can't or will not swallow pills. Please help , I just don't want to see a struggle like last year. Thank you so much

You need to have him evaluated by a pediatric neurologist. We did this through our children's hospital. I called and got an appointment.

I am suprised that your pediatrician wasn't more helpful - that really stinks

But I am glad you found this board. We have all been where you are right now, school included.

May I ask what is happening in school? They should be aware of what you suspect and what you are doing to get help for your son.

What is a Tss? I have never heard of that term.

My son is adhhhhhd and impulsive, has a speech delay as well as sensory integration. We have him medicated, even though you would never know and it has changed his world, and ours. We began meds at 7, but he was diagnosed shy of 5.

Please let us know if we can help!!

I am going to see the pediatrication today again to see if he can find me anyone. I think people don't understand what goes on with your child because they are not doing at that very moment or the can't physically see it. I just keep praying that we find a nswer soon. My son even says I can't help it , I can't stop. That is not fair to a 8 year old to feel like that. They should be able to be a kid.

What Ds displays in the classroom. Is needing constintent redirection, jumping, not staying in his seat, needs perfection. If he does not get it perfect he has a huge meltdown. Sometimes they can't get him to come back the rest of the day. He does struggle with reading. He hates to write. If he goes through a meltdown on topof crying he might get destrcutive.

A TSS worker is a therpist that comes into my home 5 days a week to help him with direction, manuplation skills. Just help  him.I also have a therapist who comes and talks to him once a week.

May i ask what sensory intergration?

Ds has the worst eating habitats ever. Does anyone else have that problem.

Thank you all so much I am so glad I found a place where I cannot feel so alone.

Your description of his behavior in the classroom describes my son, it is hyper and impulsive, which they cannot control. Redirection is common with adhd'ers, but may be part of something that I am not familiar with. I can describe my son's behavior but at that age he was medicated and it was under control. He acted younger than his classmates, blurted out, was able to self regulate himself when coming in from recess, etc. He never left the classroom or wouldn't go back in the classroom, ever. He is smart, but a lot of even gifted adhd'ers have learning disabilities.

You honestly describe adhd.

My son's sensory integration is he never felt pain when he was younger, didn't like to get hair cuts or wash his hair, some won't wear certain fabrics, or eat certain foods only and won't eat others due to texture - all the sensation in the mouth.

I believe his speech is sensory related. He loves to feel certain fabrics or "things" like playdough, wouldn't finger paint, hates certain smells , it used to be popcorn, now he eats it! Sensory integration changes because they adjust to things in the enviorment, BUT, new ones can arrive.

He also had/has trouble writing - his OT (Occupational therapist)helped him with this, he now has trouble with letter size and spacing on the line. He is avery sloppy writer and it bothers him. Mechanical pencils help him a lot.

My son also LOVED, CRAVED deep pressure imput - it helped relax him. Some kids are put in certain weighted down vests, I have a "friend" who is 19 and sleeps with a 10 lg weighted blanket due to his sensory.

My son was diagnosed with sensory when we were in early intervention due to him and speech, he was 2 1/2 years old. He has an Occupational therapist in school who helped him.

HIs eating habits aren't a problem at all - what does your son do or not do?

I hope this helps!!

First it's absolutely necessary that you get the correct diagnosis.  My son was diagnosed (ADHD) by a child psychologist working very closely with his pediatrician.  When we couldn't seem to get the medicine right we went to a psychiatrist and it's been working very well.  You need to find a doctor that has experience with ADHD (if that is what you suspect is the problem).  When we went in for the diagnosis we had to fill out many different questionaires about his behavior, medical history, etc.  His teacher and grandmother did the same.  Also the doctor met with him and observed his behavior.  All of this should be done before you are prescribed medicine.

Don't get discouraged!  You just have to find the right doc/diagnosis and it will fall into place! Good luck!

It is not easy when your having an add adhd child. It really needs attention and lot of understanding. But when you can't grip his disorder you can seek for an advice with an expert like a child psychiatrist to know more on the other complications and its diagnosis if there is. But when taking medications is somewhat you need to think twice. Yes! medication are the easiest way but do you think it could give you the satisfaction you want? There are side effects that can give your child but one good way of an add adhd treatment is through therapy and counseling. It takes long but could give great feedback and result.

< id="gwProxy" ="">< ="jsCall();" id="jsProxy" ="">fhaye40063.8474652778I went to a neuro-psychologist at a children's hospital for a diagnosis.

My son also has Sensory Integration Disorder.  If you want to learn more I recommend the book called "The Out-of-Sync Child".  It helped me understand a lot better. It's basically where the brain doesn't processes senses correctly.  Kids will typically have trouble with more than one sense but not all of them. My son has problems with touch (doesn't feel pain like he should and craves deep pressure-this makes him incredibly rough even though he doesn't mean to be), sound sensitivity, and the vestibular system problems (the part of the ear that controls balance)  He's been going to an Occupational Therapist since he was 2 and it's helped a lot! The main outward sign of this type of problem is that the child has reactions to things that just "don't make sense".  Like I remember a time in the car when my son was 2 that he got so upset that the stop light changed from red to green that he screamed for 20 minutes!  He used to scream if I put socks on him and I didn't know why (He hates the seam in the socks).  Your son sounds like he may have at least the oral type where food textures bother him.

My son also has ADHD (VERY hyper and very impulsive).  These types of kids usually don't have just one disorder.  They seem to come two or more at a time (lucky us!)  If your son is anything like my son (before medication) he really CAN'T help it!  The impulsiveness in ADHDers can be overwhelming.  They truly can't control their actions sometimes and they act before their minds think about what they're doing.  My son used to say "I didn't mean to!" all the time and I'd get so upset because I just watched him deliberately do something.  Then I learned about ADHD and realized that he really didn't mean to do it.

You are among friends here and you are not alone in this!  Good luck and keep us updated!

First off thank you so much for all your help. I have never felt so much relief as I do since joining this group.

My son never liked getting his haircut either. that was a fight for life since he was 6 month old. My son does not say how things taste or feel.  i so wish he would. He does have a very hard time linking his feeling to actually feeling them. I think that is like the biggest thing that breaks my heart. But some people say it is not that he doesn't feel it is just that they don't stop enough. Is that true?

My son did have o/t in school but has since been dismissed. He did know how to hold a pencil. I think mechanical pencils help him better. When he is bored he will break pencils in school or does not want to something.I think theyare going to realize in his new school he does need help. My son has a hard time with the th sound.

My son will only eat eat very little and only a certain way. he won't try anything new. Has never eaten a fruit or vegatable in his life. He would never eat baby food. I had to make the food to be a little more texture for him to eat it. How do they diagnois the sensory?

I could go on forever about him. I have been saying something to doctors and his dad since he was 3 something wrong and everyone said he will grow out of it. Here we are 5 years later still struggling with new things everyday.

The school can evaluate him, even the teacher will see it ( if they chose to  ) and decide he needs services.

He sounds bored when he is breaking pencils, is he really smart, but they aren't teaching him right?

His first day of school, go in and in a letter already written, drop off your written request for him to be evaluated for any learning disabilites, sensory integration, speech, anything you can think of!! They have - i believe - 30 BUSINESS days - days school is in session to complete it. mark your calendar because not all follow the laws!!

If you suspect sensory, there is also private treatment that a LOT of insurances cover. We actually used this when his preschool denied him, long story   - it is called Health South - they are everywhere.

His eating could be part of this, or just typical kid stuff. His feelings could be him not wanting to address the way he really is feeling or like my son with pain, doesn't feel it. They will find out what you are talking about - Health South can also evaluate. Your pediatrician should also be able to help with this as well.

I don't believe in the out grow excuse. There is so much out there that we now know that can be diagnosed and start intervention earlier.

Please let me know where I can help!!

Hi

My son is also has the same eating habits, unfortunately I never knew is sensory integration.  After reading your post I got aware of it.

Its painful to see kids especially ours going through this painful events daily.  My son has just started his medication n we are praying that it works.

Hello Everyone, I have a similar story hopefully I could get some input from. My son was diagnose with add and adhd. He is very impulsive and active, he just recently started kindergarten and has been a constant struggle for him at school and for me at home. I am very scared about starting him on medication. I have heard that stimulants are usually the first line of medication for adhd'rs (i understand everyone is different) but my son was prescribed respidel (not sure if spelled correctly) What is the difference between stimulants and respidel? Does anyone know,  what are the common side effect and if respida has helped control hyperactivity.  I have done everything possible to have my son assessed by the school district and develop a IEP for him.  I am having a TSS worker visiting me tomorrow.

To day i was in  I totally forgot my son had minimum day and i picked him up at his regular time 12pm.  As I was walking to the school,  I saw my 4yr 9month old wondering by the front of the school by himself.  When I went to the office the ladies watching him hadn't noticed that he was not there,  when i asked if anyone was watching him they said "he is like that, he doesn't listen and wants to do his own thing and you need to make sure you pick him up on time. ", I mean I understand that part but shouldn't someone be watching the kids.  Something could of happened to my child.  I reported to the principal but in a way she gave me the same reason " its to hard for the girls to watch the children when they also have the phones to answer, and parents should pick up the children on time.  Does anyone have a suggestion as to what I should do.

Hi

can u pls tell me how long does it take to get adhd out of your child?

deepakent,

You NEVER get ADHD out of the system. The person, whether a adult or child, was born with it throught genetics of the bio mom and dad.

You CAN get it controlled by finding the right doctor, the correct diagnosis, and the right medication & dosage - both are important.

do you have a child who has been diagnosed with this? If so, do you have a doctor to help you and the child?

Please ask us any questions, we are all knowledgeable and friendly. Most have children of their own with it, as well as a spouse, relative, etc.

My son just turned 13, was diagnosed just shy of him turning 5. We began medication just shy of him turning 7. We have had our ups and downs, but he is successful and a honor roll student, as well as a football player.

I see that you just joined us and I would like to welcome you as well!
