medications for adults

I realized I have ADHD when i tryed my sons aderall and it helped me focus and get things done.  I tryed his fast acting 5 mg's - took 2 pills max together- i think that is a low dose.  I have all the classic symptoms of ADHD.  I went to the dr and he prescribed straterra- kept me up all night. Now he had me try 18 mg of concerta- didn't help so upped the dose to 36 mg's. and still not helping.  Should i call him and see if he can prescribe the adderall xr.  I don't understand why adderall worked but the concerta doesn't.  If i took only 10 mg's of fast acting adderall it seems like that is a low dose.  I was wondereing if others have had some meds work and some not work.  It makes no sense to me because they both are doing the same thing to the brain.  Any thoughts?
Yes, my response varies from one medication to another, sometimes a little, sometimes a lot.   I've read that same active ingredient but different "fillers" can cause dramatic differences in effectiveness from one person to another, so there's lots of opportunity for varied responses.

"low dose", "high dose" is all relative... many of the maximum doses listed by the FDA are lower than what was found most effective in clinical trials, on the other hand, for some folks, a small or "minimum" dose is all they need (lucky them!).

Did you tell your doctor your experience with Adderall and how effective it was helping you focus and get things done?  If  you did, did he tell you why he's not prescribing Adderall for you from the start?  Seems like a reasonable question for you to ask your doctor if an explanation wasn't given....
