A new med or not | ADHD Information

I'm not familiar with Concerta but I am familiar with Texex/guanfacine.  My son had similar problems with Ritalin.  He had the side effect of moodiness and being emotional.  We started Tenex along with the Ritalin and it did the trick! Good luck!

my doc does not believe in Tenex or any of the blood pressure meds to treat Adhd. He is ultra conservative and I have told him of many cases where it has made such a huge difference. He still will not write it. there is a new 24 hr Tenex for Adhd and he said he will look into it. I have heard it is coming out shortly. My son is on Concerta 54 and Zoloft for anxiety which if not prperly balanced makes him very impulsive and that is enough of a problem. Good luck and we saw a huge difference from the 45 to the 54mg.

I thought an IEP and 504 were the same thing.  I don't have a child with ADHD (I'm the one with it but I do read all the boards here because I want to know all I can about it).  Can someone explain the difference?

I currently take 30mg/Dexedrine daily.  I know this is totally different from what all of you are using but as an adult, 30mg is supposed to be the "max".  I don't always feel it's working.  Just wondering if anyone has any experience with going above and beyond the "max" with their meds and what the outcome was.

Spamula - if your doctor is not willing to try other meds, have you considered a second opinion?  I would tend to agree that using blood pressure meds for ADHD can be risky but each situation is different and must be treated individually.  What are the docs concerns for not using Tenex?  Just curious.
He is very conservative in his med giving and in a way I appreciate this. He just doesn't believe in it. But when I asked him about a new tenex that is 24 hour and for adhd he seemed interested does anyone know about this?

Background:  My son was diagnosed at age 6 he's 8 now.  He's on 45mg of Concerta.  He's extremely intelligent, and a sweetheart.  But he gets so emotional, and so implusive even on medication., but mainly at school.  At home he pretty much knows that we aren't having it.  There are times when he pushes the envelope but he straightens up when he see we mean business.  And he's a "military brat".

I'm fairly new to the ADHD realm.  Before my son's diagnosis I was in denial about the condition, mainly because I was unknowledgeable about it.  I'm a believer, now. My son's meds is ineffective right now.  I think an increase in his dosage will help with his concentration, but his main problem is his implusiveness and his emotional outburst.  My question is should I try a new med within the same class or stick with the concerta and request tenex to help with his implusiveness and emotional outburst?

Like I said his implusiveness and emotional outburst mainly happen at school.  There are 30 kids in his class at the charter school he attends.  I'm pretty sure his teacher has had experience with a child with ADHD but it doesn't seem as if they are accomodating to a child with ADHD (he has an IEP and I'm thinking about a 504 plan for him.)

I didn't know an IEP is stronger than a 504 plan.  But that's good to know.  I just want to make sure he gets the needed accomodations while at school.  He has an appointment Thursday and I'm going to ask his doctor about guanfacine.  I hope it goes well and his doctor agrees, and if he does I hope it calms him down.

I appreciate your response.  Thanks...

My son is on concerta AND guanfacine. The guanfacine helps his impulsiveness and calms him down.

I wonder, if it might help your son?! Also when we upped him once in second grade, his teacher said that it didn't change anything. So we increased his guanfacine and she said he was right where he needed to be. My son is only on 1 mg of guanface but boy it sure does the trick.

I would call the doctor, discuss the med increase and ask about guanfacine.

Also, I just read that he is on an IEP - this is stronger than a 504 plan. Why do you want to change it??? He is lucky to be on an IEP.

We had an IEP but were moved to a 504 plan due to not qualifying.
