Great little topic.
And Nice work--thank you for sharing- for me this makes perfect sense though.
Hello Everyone, hopefully I could get some input from. My son was diagnose with add and adhd. He is very impulsive and active, he just recently started kindergarten and has been a constant struggle for him at school and for me at home. I am very scared about starting him on medication. I have heard that stimulants are usually the first line of medication for adhd'rs (i understand everyone is different) but my son was prescribed respidel (not sure if spelled correctly) What is the difference between stimulants and respidel? Does anyone know, what are the common side effect and if respidal has helped control hyperactivity.
To day i was in
I totally forgot my son had minimum day and i picked him up at his regular time 12pm. As I was walking to the school, I saw my 4yr 9month old wondering by the front of the school by himself. When I went to the office the ladies watching him hadn't noticed that he was not there, when i asked if anyone was watching him they said "he is like that, he doesn't listen and wants to do his own thing and you need to make sure you pick him up on time. ", I mean I understand that part but shouldn't someone be watching the kids. Something could of happened to my child. I reported to the principal but in a way she gave me the same reason " its to hard for the girls to watch the children when they also have the phones to answer, and parents should pick up the children on time. Does anyone have a suggestion as to what I should do.
My son was formally diagnosed just shy of 5, (even though I personally diagnosed him at age 2!!). I too was afraid of meds. We didn't introduce meds until he was almost 7.
My son suffered tremendously. He was labeled by the kids, the staff, and the parents. He is adhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhd and impulsive.
Meds changed his/our lives for the better. He has always been really really smart, but this adhd stuff got in his way and he got in trouble. My son is the nicest, very sensitive, caring, thoughtful boy you could meet, but no one got to see that side of him because he did things that aggrevated others and made them mad. He never did anything mean, he just was annoying.
I am not a med pusher, but I can tell you what happened TO my son before meds. All I can say is that my son needed help and I wasn't there. I was afraid, and my SON suffered.
I can't go back and change the past, but I can speak out and inform others. Your child needs help, please help him.
My son is 12, just started 7th grade, an honor student, football player, and all around great kid!
I would contact my pediatrician and discuss this. We use a psychopharmacologist , they specialize in this field of medicine and mental health. I feel comfortable with the medications my son is taking. He takes concerta, a stimulant, and guanfacine, which controls his impulsiveness AND his overstimulation.
Please feel free to ask any questions.
