I need a definitive answer please. | ADHD Information
Well, I think mine lasts the 12 hours. Since I don't feel anything
when Iit's active, I don't expect I'd feel anything when it is used up.
I don't feel drugged, I feel perfectly normal except I can focus in a
way that I couldn't for specific tasks that I have to do right now.
And I sit still, my legs aren't bouncing or swinging. So I feel
remarkably calm and focused not aware of a drug feeling.
Also about it making our metabolism race because it's a stimulant
I'd also like more info on that because it's my understanding that
it does not do that to the ADD brain. For us, it beefs up the deficient
chemicals to normal, and calms and focuses. For non-ADD brain,
their it would act as "speed," and give a high. I've known plenty of
people that took "speed" and it sure didn't calm them or get them
focused!
Frankly, if it's causing my body to race I don't want to take it.
It calms and focuses us it doesn't change your brain metaoblism it's just how long it is effective and how quickly it leaves your body. Thats how it was explained to me. It calms certain areas of our minds but it also speeds up our hearts and metabolism, which is why we have to go for ekg's at least once a year just to make sure everything is alright. I've never felt my heart racing or anything. In fact I never feel fast or jumpy at all on the meds I just know my doc monitors my heart and I have to get blood work a few times a year to check my liver and kidneys.
I don't feel drugged at all while the meds are in my system. They just help me slow down and think clearly. For example when the meds wear off I will not be able to sit still and type on the computer. Without meds I don't sit down at all. I'm extremely hyperactive so if I even try to force myself to sit down even just to eat a quick meal I get so jumpy and uncomfortable I have to get up. With meds I can sit for a bit and actually relax. That's how I know when they are working and when they have worn off. I've heard of people feeling hyper or euphoric but I don't get any of that I just get calm.
Lol I know what your saying about the speed kids were taking adderall in college and they got crazy hyper. It works the opposite with me but so do a lot of other meds. Have you ever taken Nyquill or something like that they don't make me sleeping they make me hyper. I guess my brain really is wired different.
Thanks Mafia.
My doctor hasn't said anything about monitoring the heart, but this
is all fairly new and right now it's the blood pressure we're
concerned with. Mine was high beforehand but it's unknown
whether that was usual or not. I have no other risk factors except
genetic. I'm going to get a home bp monitor and keep track
in that relaxed environment. If it's consistently high, I'm going to
have to stop taking the Adderall, and that rules out any of the
stimulants and the Strattera they all can effect blood pressure
negatively.
Since there's a blood pressure medication I've been seeing on these
boards that is also used for ADD, maybe that will be the route.
Any adults on that that can share how it's worked?
I heard people on the board speak of using chlonidine to help with ADHD. I have no experience with it so don't have any info but I'm sure there are many who can offer advice if you wind up going that route. Good luck
Adderall is a stimulant and stimulants make you "pee". Think how many people drink coffee to help them "go". Even over the conter diuretics have caffiene in them.
Oh and if you take vitamin supplements definately take them after the meds where off. And try not to eat or drink things with a lot of vitamin C or citric acid because they basically wipe the medication out of your body.
Adderall doesn't make me have to "pee" any more often. In fact it
seems to be less. And as I said, I always had to get up once or twice,
during the night, having nothing to do with medication. I actually
seem to be having nights where I sleep through and don't have to
get up now . . .
"Think how many people use coffee to go" I don't know anybody
who drinks cofee for regularity! I'm 50 years old, I know a lot of
people, lived a lot of places and never once have I heard anyone
claim coffee was being used deliberately as a diuretic or laxative!
Though it definitely does those things annoyingly so. I stopped
drinking coffee a few years ago.
The claim that these drugs drain your body of vitamins and that
Vitamin C or orange juice, someone else claimed, negates the
effectiveness is pretty important IF it's true. I want to research that
and hear it from experts, from studies not something that just
gets passed around on a blog. So, if you are sure this is true, how
about a site where we can check this out medically and nutritionally?
I don't even notice the drug wearing off Adderall XR lasts all day
and seems fine so not sure about that either.
I've always taken a high potency multivitamin and since Adderall
and the stimulants DO cause blood pressure to spike that is a
problem and you can find that on any official info about it it's
important to know the other stuff since to counter high blood
pressure a large daily dose of Vitamin C is recommended the
multi's don't have anywhere near what is recommended today.
So if someone takes the Vitamin C for the bp the drug contributes to
but then negates the drug, it's a vicious circle.
I'm looking for proof, in other words. Not anecdotes.
The Vitamin C thing is written on the pamphlet the pharmacie sticks in with my prescription and my doctor also told be about it. Amphetamines and Vitamin C don't mix.
I'm going to try to find the sites I had with the most important info. Got a new computer so haven't transfered my favorites menu over yet but I will update this post when I find them again. You can always ask your pharmasist too. If anyone knows about med interactions it's them.
LOL never get my info from blogs but I know where you are coming from there is a lot of shifty info on the web.
Adderall doesn't make me pee more but I don't drink much either so no excess water to eliminate. If I drink finish one .5L bottle of water in a day I'm impressed. Usually I don't even finish it.
From experience Adderall last 7 hours for me not "12 hours" like Shire the company who makes the med suggests. My doctor told me it all depends on your brain metabolism so some people burn through the medication faster then others.
I'm 54 male and just started back on Adderall 20QD after 5 years being off it. I read the following statement on the adhdnews.com website and I was wondering if this is true. Because, since being back on Adderall (6 mos now) I have had to get up a couple times each night to urinate! No....before you ask, I am not having prostate problems My PSA is 0.5

From adhdnews.com
-----------------
"Adderall is a diuretic, it will dehydrate you, this would cause some of the symptoms you describe. Also, amphetamines drain your body of vitamins. At night take Vitamin B, Magnesium and zinc, and might as well get some vitamin C at this time. Remember that your body is moving very fast, this means it's burning everything faster, food, water, nutrients, etc."

So IS Adderall a "diuretic" or can it act like one? I've "googled" it several ways but cannot find a definitive answer.
Thank you
PineyYes, absolutely. Wouldn't the definitive answer need to come from the experts on
research.
Heck I've always gotten up once or twice to go to the bathroom, and
nothing's been wrong! Adderall has not increased that.
Seems to me if you are dehydrated as someone said can happen, you
wouldn't have anything to urinate . . . Thanks to you both.
pineyThe peeing has to do with your kidneys, you pee more and need more fluid because your kidneys are cleaning themselves.
The peeing has to do with your kidneys, you pee more and need more fluid because your kidneys are cleaning themselves.
Yes....I know that! But what does it have to do with Adderall?
The carton insert for Adderall says nothing about it being a diuretic in any respect. [see: http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/druginfo/medmaster/a601234.html ] It does say not to take "diuretics" while taking Adderall. Maybe then there would be a "synergistic" effect. So in that statement not to take diuretics must mean Adderall has a diuretic effect of it's own.
