celexa AND trazodine?? | ADHD Information

ok.. the doc just switched up dd's meds again since the trazodine is helping her sleep great!!

so shes taking adderal xr 10 mg, celexa 10mg in the am and trazodine 25mg at bed.

i know the celexa is for anger, frustration issues... and the trazodine for sleep... but they both are antidepressants and are SSRI's ... so does that seem ok to anyone else besides the psychiatrist?

First of all, I started 50mg trazodone for sleep just about 3 weeks ago for myself.  I have had a little success with it.  Most nights it helps me GET to sleep but I still have great difficulty STAYING asleep.  From what I've read about this medication, it currently is NOT approved for use as a sleep aid but the reason doctors use it as such is because it is not habit forming and one of the main side effects is drowsiness when taken in low doses. I was concerned about taking something habit forming and I'm not a big fan of anti-depressants either.  All they do is make me fat.  I haven't noticed any anti-depressive properties since starting this medication.  I don't take Celexa so I don't know that much about it but I don't think it's all that uncommon to take more than one anti-depressant as long as they're in the same family.  I think with SSRI's one of the warnings is to not take it with an MAOI.  I'm not a doctor but I think your combination is probably safe.  Psychiatrists are trained in medicine as well as mental health so I would think that he would know best.

ok thanks for tha info!

well.. it seems to KEEP her asleep, im not sure it really helps her go to sleep though lol! isnt that funny how it would be opposite of you! lol!  the last 4 nighst she has slept like a log!! but last night she was up till 1 am with it, but once a sleep... it was great lol!

Trazodone does the same for me: It tends to help me STAY asleep, but it does absolutely nothing to GET me to sleep. I take otc benadryl for the getting to sleep part. I take this combo for the same reason-- because it is not as habit forming as some of the more common sleep aids.

I also have quite a bit of experience with Celexa, and the newer, more pure form Lexapro. They are anti-depressant/axiolytics, and they work pretty well for that. I have noticed a large difference with them. I used to have anti-social issues, trouble going out, not wanting to meet new people or sit down and talk about anything etc. and --not anger-- but big time frustration issues too. The Celexa (and then Lexapro) made a big difference with these things as I am much less prone to either frustration or anti-social behaviors.

Currently I am perscribed and take 20 mg Lexapro (equivilant to 40mg Celexa), 30mg Vynanse and to sleep: 125mg diphenhydramine (to get to sleep) along with 50mg trazodone (to stay asleep through the night). This combo seems pretty effective. Personally I have had no problems with the mix except getting sleepy in the morning before the Vyvanse kicks in.

Hope this helps :)
