Vyvanse and vomiting | ADHD Information

My 12 year old son just started taking Vyvanse today (50 mg). I gave it to him at 5:45 am. When he came home from school at 3:30 he had a headache (which he frequently gets anyway). He has also been vomiting since. I know vomiting can be a side effect of Vyvanse but I would think that it would be seen closer to when it got into his system. I am trying to figure out if he coincidentally became sick or if it is the med. I'll guess I'll have a better idea tomorrow. Anyone have any experiences with vomiting on Vyvanse? How long after dosing did the vomiting start? Thanks!

My daugther started Vyvanse this week also.  She had stomach complaints for the first few days.  She did also get a virus.  No complaints about stomach today, but I was more aggressive about making her eat more breakfast.

Doesn't seem like it will work for us - she is starting to develop tics.

I don't know what to do next.

My 6 year old ds is on Vyvanse (30mg) and has been for 2.5 months.  While he has had a stomach virus during that time and therefore some vomiting--it was only for a 24 hr period.  It's not something we've had to deal with.  I'd say give a it a couple of day s(which by this point you have) and if it's still going on and he's not got a fever or anything-call the prescribing dr.

Good luck and hope he feels better!

Vicky

Thanks Vicky!

It did actually turn out to be a 24 hr. stomach bug. He is now on his 5th day of Vyvanse and so far we are very happy with it! Now I waiting to see if there is any improvement in his grades!

My younger son was on Vyvanse, starting at age 6 @ 30mg.
Within 2months we upped it to 40mg but he was having
HORRIBLE rebound in the afternoons (but wonderful days at
school). We took him off the med over the summer and when
we tried to put him back on it within 2days he was back
to being whiney, fussy and just plain ole miserable to be
around. We ended up switching him immediately to 10mg of
Metadate CD 10mg, and upped it to 20mg within a week and
he's been great ever since! What *I* like about the
Metadate CD is there is NO personality change, he EATS,
and he's doing much better in school. They see his sweet,
funny personality not this quiet/moody kid (which is NOT
him)

But that's just us :)

My son started on Vyvanse (20 mg) on Saturday. He complained of nausea in the morning and started vomiting in the afternoon. By 5 p.m. he was feeling better and I noticed an improvement in behavior.

I was reluctant to give him another dose yesterday after the vomiting, but did and he was absolutely fine all day -- no nausea, no vomiting. And improved behavior.

Today is the first day at school so we'll know how well it is really working then.

My 10 year old is on VyVanse XR but it doesnt last.  She also takes Adderall in the afternoon.  She is on a low dose of both though.

The thing I have noticed is that she does take the VyVanse at 8am.  I make sure she eats something before she takes it.  If not, then she complains of a sick stomach if she eats after it.  She has been on it for over a year now and this has not changed.  Also she refuses to eat lunch.  Her Adderall doesnt start til 1pm.  Usually she will eat her lunch as a snack in the afternoon before she leaves school.  Dinner is usually her main meal.  Shes normal height and weight for her age so this never is a concern.  She eats breakfast, might eat something in the afternoon but she chows down at dinner.

Her school used to fight with her to eat lunch and I told them that she just simply isnt hungry and to not worry because she will eat a good dinner.  This went on until I had to have a doctor write a note to inform them of this side effect.  It was frustrating because I was working at her school at the time.  They would call me in to make her eat.

But even now at a year later, she still cant handle food in the morning after she has taken the medication.  She wants to sit and have breakfast at school with her friends but has learned to just enjoy the company instead of the actual food.

THis is day for 4 us and no upset stomach and significant improvements at school and at home. I am kind of waiting for the other shoe to drop, so to speak. So far, so good.

Also, does anyone else find it odd that all of our kids got a stomach virus and vomiting the first few days of this medication??

Seems great now though.

I'll keep you posted.
