focalin xr in the evenings | ADHD Information

Hi everyone,

My son is 5 years and has been on Focalin XR for a couple of day. It works great till about 5pm then it wears off. And he is a nightmare at baseball practice and church. Has anyone tryed given it or taken it  in the late afternoon? And how did it work out???

I don't have any experience with Focalin but it's probably possible to take an extra dose of the fast acting type to help in the evenings.  We've done that with Adderall and Ritalin.  The typical problem is with sleep.  A lot of times that last dose will keep the kid up all hours of the night.  My son has never had that problem (thankfully!) and I have given him a dose as late as 5 or 6pm to help in the evenings. Yes, you can give a 2.5 dosage for baseball and church. You can't give the XR version late because 50% releases immediately and the other 59% releases 4 hours later.Yes, get some of the short-acting (non-XR) from your doc, that way it will wear off by bedtime....

Also, FYI, it may be wearing off at 5:00 now, but if it follows the same trend that I and others have noticed, it will wear off much sooner than that in a few weeks to months.  My son has been taking Focalin on and off for the past several years, and a dose lasts him only 5-6 hours now.  Just something to keep an eye out for....

Yes, focalin wears off the quickest.
